Koken barber chairs are easily recognizable by their leather seats, padded arm and foot rests, and elaborate wood carvings. These were the first barber chairs to use a hydraulics system. Many vintage Koken barber chairs can be found in antique shops and online at sites like eBay, Craigslist and online antique marketplaces like Ruby Lane. Look for a Koken patent stamp.This Koken Barber Chair (pictured right) sold on eBay for $1500.
Some Koken barber chairs have serious condition issues that can bring down the price. Most of these will be refurbished by collectors and dealers. A chair from the early 1900s in good condition can sell for $5,000 to $6,000. Be sure to test the hydraulics system to make sure it can rotate, lock and recline. If possible, be sure to have the Kroken chair appraised by an expert before you buy. Also keep in mind that an experienced photographer can disguise or downplay water spots and other damage, so be sure to include a contingency clause for damage in the purchase contract. Be sure to ask questions about the chair's history.
Some vintage-style Koken chairs are still in use at small town barber shops. Next time you visit a small town and need a haircut, be sure to look for an equally vintage style barber pole. It will be worth the visit just to have a chance to sit in a real vintage Koken chair.

The Koken Manufacturing Company
The Koken Manufacturing Company is still in business and still producing quality chairs for the beauty and barber shop industry. Their St. Louis-based plant and administrative center currently employs 87 people, including engineers, woodworkers, machine operators and designers.Koken's product line has evolved to meet the needs of the modern world and they also produce dental cabinets and assorted furniture for the beauty shop.
They have occasionally tried to branch out into other areas with limited success. The company has been through a number of hands and is currently owned by the Japanese beauty product manufacturers Takara-Belmont.
What Else Did Koken Sell?
- Edward Koken started out by hand painting shaving mugs, around 1874. Look for a circular marking that says, "Decorated by Koken & Boppert St. Louis."
- Personalized copper coins for barber customers are stamped with Koken's CO; St. Louis on one side and the name of the barber shop on the other.
