Dollhouse dolls ... they're addictive!

Collecting dollhouse dolls doesn't mean you have to collect dollhouses, you can make room size arrangements on shelves or in shadow boxes to hang on the wall.

There are so many to choose from although good quality antique dollhouse dolls are not so easily come by. I guess that many were so well played with they were simply discarded when the next generation came along to play with the house.

It would also be fair to say that many of the older dolls may have had lead paint or lead feet / hands which may have meant they were thrown away when folks realised how detrimental lead is to development.

The Grecon dolls further down this lens are an example of those with lead feet. They are highly collectable but definitely not for children.

You need to be mindful of such things if you are putting together a collection for a child.

These dolls are in a private collection and the pictures etc will be added to over time.

Papier mache dolls

... origin a bit of a mystery

Stunningly made and possibly Eastern European in origin, these 12th scale dolls, handmade from papier mache, are truly a beautiful pair. Sadly we don't know very much about them or who made them.

They are wired to be posable.

Two little maids

The larger of these two dolls has cast metal head, hands and feet with wire through body to make it posable which is tightly wrapped with durable twine(?). We think the manufacturer of this doll is Caco(sp?) of Germany.

The smaller maid, also German, is bisque. Both of these dolls are supposed to be 12th scale - perhaps the smaller one is a child maid?

Celluloid

... pre-war dolls

A selection of celluloid dolls.

The 12th scale child and 16th scale 'duchess' have real hair. The Duchess' clothes are all original but are pinned onto the doll so we guess she wasn't meant to be cuddled. From the type of embroidery on the apron of the Duchess' dress I would estimate her to be late Victorian - Edwardian in date.

The largest doll of these three is a 12th scale adult.

Makers unknown.

The Governess

... Sandra Morris of Towerhouse Dolls

The Governess is my name for her, I just think she looks as if she could snap her fingers and children would fall into line.

She is a 12th scale doll, handmade by Sandra Morris of Towerhouse Dolls.

Aunt Clara

... beautiful handmade doll by Clara Cribb

We do like Aunt Clara, she's a fairy hunter, hence her delightful garden.

Aunt Clara is a 12th scale doll handmade by Clara Cribb.

Hand Made

... exquisite porcelain dolls from Isabel Wood

A very prim and proper 12th scale Edwardian style lady and her gentleman close to 30 years old.

Both are handmade by Isabel Wood.

German porcelain

... a magnificent twelfth scale doll

Wonderful 12th scale German porcelain doll with a soft body (stuffed with sawdust). Her head and neck, arms and feet are all porcelain.

Tiny porcelain

... 1:16 scale German porcelain doll

And at just 3.5 inches tall, this German porcelain doll is c 16th scale and also has a soft body stuffed with sawdust.

These last two are both antique dolls.

Grecon dollhouse dolls

... from children to Grandparents

Grecon dolls were made for 16th scale dollhouses and quite a range is available.

They ceased to be manufactured some years ago. Mass produced dolls became available cheaply and so these handmade dolls became a thing of the past.

Sometimes they are seen in poor condition yet even so they can reach quite high prices.

The feet are lead and bodies are wired to be posable, the wires being wrapped with wool

They come in all 'ages' from children to Grannies.

Vintage Grecon

... Made in England 1:16 scale dolls

This is one of the Grecons my daughter has which are of museum quality.

This 16th scale policewoman is quite a rarity in Grecon dolls and she had to pay a high price to secure this for her collection ... well worth it though.

The dog in these pictures is a Lundby dog ... don't you think the toddler in her little red coat is just gorgeous.

Dol-Toi

... desirable vintage dolls

The Dol-Toi dolls, with lead feet and plastic heads, were in production during the 50s, 60s and into the 70s. The black couple are in the later years of the date range.

1:16 scale, these are not my favourites, I prefer the character of the Grecon dolls.
