Antique Shopping in London - buying areas
Although London used to be the prime buying place for antiques, regional and suburban Antiques Fairs have now taken over as major buying places of interest.
Getting around London is fairly easy by Tube (underground) or Bus. Unlimited travel passes are available at tube stations. Taxis are reasonably priced and always have a working meter.
You can stay in London in Travel Lodge hotels at reasonable prices (bargains in Winter and early Spring)
When Antiques shopping in London you will almost always have to pay Cash in Sterling and it is sensible to wear comfortable shoes as many streets are still cobblestones - especially in markets.
Please note that his page changes DAILY and it would be sensible to bookmark it to avoid missing a bargain !
To be ABSOLUTELY certain of the authenticity of a high cost antique, buy from a member of the LAPDA Antiques association (with very strict rules and good members !)
Most London Antiques dealers are honest and will answer questions truthfully.

This is an INDISPENSIBLE GUIDE to British Hallmarks.
It's NOT a price guide - it helps you to identify makers and origins. It is easily pocketable and you really need this if you are buying silver.

Portobello Road
Wholesale - Fridays Retail - Saturdays
Nearest Tube Station is Notting Hill Gate
Market is mostly confined to arcades on Fridays
On Saturdays the streets are a huge market of small stalls with a fruit and veg market (which smetimes turns into a junk market at the far end)
The very far end is a very poor area (relatively speaking !)and is not for the faint-hearted - also a drugs centre !
The middle part is more a flea market with great deals on retro clothes etc.
I Advise sticking to the upper & middle ends of the market where the arcades are.
Arcades are often on several floors (no elevators !)
and have hundreds of tiny booths selling just about everything. There are many fakes on sale in the market - especially bronzes,18th C paintings and ivory (usually resin or bone )
The arcades are one of the cheapest sources of antiques in London (Bermondsey Market is a little cheaper - very early on Friday morning)
Haggling is necessary - a trade card helps.
You can usually get 10% off marked price at many booths. The phrase to use is - What is the Trade price ?
Portobello Road area Antiques markets and stores - many stay open all week.
Friday is pretty much the Wholesale day and some dealers on;y open on Fridays.

(150 dealers !)
Portobello Road dealers come & go (mostly) so its impossible to keep this list updated.
The best way to get there is either by public transport (Ladbroke Grove Tube Station ) or Taxi.
There are many pickpockets especially on Saturdays.
(These usually operate on the tube or in tube stations or where there are crowds.
Portobello Arcades and shops are like Aladdins cave and you may at first be quite confused.
There are specialist dealers and these are worth seeking out. Some of the arcadeswith smaller booths often have the best bargains but you MUST get there early to find them.
Many of the arcades have cafes and there are also many good restaurants in the area.
Smaller dealers only accept Sterling Cash but there are exchange offices (banks give a much better rate !)
Bermondsey Market
For early birds only ..
It's the Wholesale antiques market for London.
Hundreds of small booths have just about any small item you can think of. Fakes abound though so be careful.Only buy expensive items if you are an expert.
The area around the market is a bit seedy so please be careful about wandering down side streets.
The market is surrounded by warehouses containing many antiques firms and arcades of smaller dealers.
There are also many firms thatwill buy all over Britain and send the container full of antiques back to you by ship !
This is a great service to busy antiques dealers who want to buy specific things like Chippendale or early furniture. Ask around for quotes though as this is not a cheap service.
This is a GREAT place to buy - starts at 4 am though and most bargains have gone by 8 am !
To get there either stay near Tower Bridge and walk down or take a taxi (book the night before). You will be competing against UK dealers looking for stock.
Haggling is de rigeur and the stallholders always start high !
This is a great market for smalls - collectibles and silver items. Sometimes you see unusual stuff like North American Native weapons and clothing or oriental china.
This doesn't make it to antique shops in the UK !
You'll need a wheeled trolley to collect your goodies.
Although this used to be known as a thieves market (where receipts are unknown) it is now a legitimate market and you'll be amazed at the variety of items available. Be wary of fake French Glass (being made in Hungary nowadays) and Italian Plaster/marble plaques (attractive and very reasonably priced but they ARE modern)
Last time I went there was a severe shortage of public toilets though - so go before you go !

Regional and Suburban Antiques Markets
Ardingley - huge market with thousands of vendors
Newark (on an aerodrome) huge market again with thousands of vendors. It is essential to get to this market on the first day to get good bargains.
Do NOT buy tickets from anyone other than the main ticket office - forgeries abound !
Birmingham City Centre 1st Wednesday in each month. Starts 7.00 am Its probably easier to stay in a City centre hotel although there is a coach service to Birmingham from London specificaly for the market (see trade magazines for recent details)
There is no admission fee to the main market.(or wasn't when I last went !)
Many bargains here - start at the stalls outside first !
Birmingham has a large jewellery quarter (Wholsale mostly) and you may need a trade card to buy there.
Get there by bus from the city centre - ask anyone and they'll tell you how to get there.
Many British jewellery items are made there and some seconds are sold in the Antiqes market (mentioned above)
Leeds has good antiques shops and there's a LARGE antiques warehouse in Halifax in Northern England at reasonanble prices.Although you may have to haggle hard to get decent prices...
If you are in Europe in early September then do visit the Lille (France) Antiques fair in the 1st weekend of September. It's over 7 Kilometres of street markets ! The theory is that any citizen of Lille can just sell their unwanted stuff from their attics ! (In fact antiques dealers and Brocantes from all over Europe grab pitches there )- great fun but book a hotel a year in advance !!
There are hundreds of Antiques shops in almost all of the Cotswld Towns and Gloucestershire. These include arcades of display cases from other dealers.
In arcades with display cases the prices are usually fixed.
Other good areas are Norfolk,Suffolk and Essex with regular new shipments coming into antiques dealers via Harwich Port.
Norwich is a good buying centre with excellent arcades and lots of antiques shows and fairs (especially in Summer)
Pretty much every town in Britain has one or two shops and the cheapest areas are around the ports - Liverpool,Southampton,Plymouth etc.
Ireland has been pretty much looted of antiques now but some single shops remain with good buys.
Beware of furniture reproductions though in Britain as there are factries turning out 'Chippendale' and 'Sheraton' furniture from original designs.
Blue and White Porcelain and Copper hunting horns, bellows and enamel signs are also widely reproduced and often imported from China.
