"Ants On A Log" Is A Quick And Easy Snack

Ants On A Log is a healthy snack that's great for kids of all ages. It's pretty simple, some celery, peanut butter and raisins. Except for people who don't like peanut butter, or are allergic to peanuts, it's a pretty delicious treat!

Along with toast, it was one of the first things I learned to make for myself, and it's just as easy. It's also pretty fun, especially for kids, to pretend that you are eating a line of ants marching along a log!

An Easy Recipe

You Don't Even Need To Know Much About Cooking

One of my favorite things on Squidoo is all the talented Lensmasters sharing their recipes. I wanted to share one myself, and while I can't claim this as my own, it is probably the first thing I learned to make for myself after toast!

How to Make Ants on a Log

Can it be much easier than this?

How to Make Ants on a Log
from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Ants on a log is a basic, fun, and nutritional snack for kids and ideal for a kid's party for appetizers.
Ingredients

  • 1 stalk of celery for each person (depending how many big the pieces are cut)
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup raisins

Steps
  1. Cut the celery stalks in pieces, depending on how long you want each piece to be; whether it's half a stalk or an inch of celery.
  2. Spread peanut butter in the celery piece.
  3. Put raisins on the peanut butter, scattering them around like they are ants on a log.

Tips
  • You can substitute oats for raisins to seem like it's termites instead of ants.

What Do You Think About Ants On A Log?

For me, I usually just enjoy peanut butter and celery, but every so often I add the raisins.

Variations Of Ants On A Log

It's amazing how many variations you can come up with!

Yeah, I'm very sloppy with placing the raisins, but it can be fun to have kids experiment with placing the raisins -- their Ants -- on a Log. Maybe they can be placed in a single file, or two by two. Perhaps the ants can be placed in a zig-zag pattern.

Here's some more ideas on changing things up:

Ants on a Slip 'n Slide - Celery and Peanut butter, a layer of honey, then the Raisins.

Aphids on a log - Use sunflower seeds in place of Raisins.

Gnats on a log - Use currants in place of Raisins.

Ants on vacation - Celery and Peanut butter without "ants," (Raisins).

Ghost ants on a log - Mini marshmallows instead of Raisins.

Other things to try:

  • Cream cheese instead of peanut butter
  • Cheese Wiz instead of peanut butter
  • Chopped up celery instead of peanut butter and raisins
  • Pine nuts instead of raisins
  • Yellowtail instead of celery
  • Pretzels instead of celery
  • Chocolate chips instead of raisins

The peanut butter version of ants on a log is recommended as a healthy "Smart Snack," comprising several food groups, by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

My kids loved Ants on a Log! Well, partially...they ate the peanut butter and the raisins and left the celery. Great lens.

Hmmm, not quite sure whether this would go down very well in my household - one likes peanut butter, the other likes raisins, neither like celery! But lovely idea for a lens even if my children wont appreciate it :)
