Revolutionised by space technology

An ant farm is a fascinating way to introduce children to the concepts of habitats. Whilst being an educational gift for children they can also make a unique gift for an adult. Especially those ones who are difficult to buy gifts for because they have everything! Ant farms used to be designed with sand or dirt for the substrate for the ants to build their tunnels and you would have to feed them. However, as with all things new technology is available and in fact the AntWorks farm was developed by NASA scientists. The habitat is based upon a 2003 NASA Space Shuttle experiment to study ants in zero-gravity. Ant Farms have come a long way from the sand between the glass ones of old. Many now use a special gel in a clear acrylic habitat. The nutrient rich space age gel provides the ants food, home and substrate for tunnelling.

Helpful tips when buying an ant farm

Buy an ant farm - best gift ever!!!Here are some helpful tips to make your ant watching experience the best possible!

1. The ant farms do not arrive with ants - you can order them online or you use the form enclosed with you ant farm (delivery times seem to vary from a few days to 6 weeks depending on the supplier and time of year).
2. Harvester ants are the best. Do NOT collect fire ants or army ants.
3. Be careful when adding ants to habitat - they will try to escape and can deliver a nasty bite.
4. Putting the vial of ants in the fridge for a short time will make them a little more docile for adding, then place whole vial in habitat and close habitat lid - remove vial later when all ants are safely out.
5. Ants only have a life expectancy of approx 3 months.
6. Ants are cheap to buy at between $3 and $10 (you can collect your own just follow the instructions).
7. When poking holes to start tunnels for your ants, do this close to the glass so you can see the tunnels in much more detail.
8. Use the magnifying glass and zoom tool to get up close and personal with your ants.
9. You need to remove the lid for a few seconds each week to allow oxygen inside - be careful when you do this as they will swarm to the opening and try to escape!
10. The ants do BITE!!! So younger children should be supervised at all times.

The Life and Times of the Ant

The Life and Times of the Ant - only $6.95
Cheerful account emphasizes the prolific insect's impressive history, industry, and sociability. Each busy spread introduces an aspect of the ant's life cycle and its work in tunneling and maintaining the colony. Brief text is accompanied by an informative array of captioned watercolor sketches. Cartoon figures of ants in human guise are liberally sprinkled among the more factual drawings.
