What Are Anxiety/Panic Disorders?
Anxiety disorders are quite common in today's population
Anxiety disorders are quite common in today's population. 18% of all Americans suffer from some sort of Anxiety disorder or panic attacks.
The most common form of anxiety disorder is a panic disorder. Often striking without warning or without reason. The fear response is often out of proportion for the situation the person is dealing with. After having a few attacks the person develops a constant fear of having recurring attacks.

What Are the Different Types of Anxiety Disorders?
There are several recognized anxiety disorders, including:
* Panic disorder:People with this condition have feelings of terror that strike suddenly and repeatedly with no warning. Other symptoms of a panic attack include sweating, chest pain, palpitations (irregular heartbeats), and a feeling of choking, which may make the person feel like he or she is having a heart attack or "going crazy."
* Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD):
People with OCD are plagued by constant thoughts or fears that cause them to perform certain rituals or routines. The disturbing thoughts are called obsessions, and the rituals are called compulsions. An example is a person with an unreasonable fear of germs who constantly washes his or her hands.
* Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD):
PTSD is a condition that can develop following a traumatic and/or terrifying event, such as a sexual or physical assault, the unexpected death of a loved one, or a natural disaster. People with PTSD often have lasting and frightening thoughts and memories of the event, and tend to be emotionally numb.
* Social anxiety disorder :
Also called social phobia, social anxiety disorder involves overwhelming worry and self-consciousness about everyday social situations. The worry often centers on a fear of being judged by others, or behaving in a way that might cause embarrassment or lead to ridicule.
* Generalized anxiety disorder :
This disorder involves excessive, unrealistic worry and tension, even if there is little or nothing to provoke the anxiety.
* Specific phobias:
A specific phobia is an intense fear of a specific object or situation, such as snakes, heights, or flying. The level of fear usually is inappropriate to the situation and may cause the person to avoid common, everyday situations.

What Causes Anxiety Disorders?
Anxiety disorder is a real sickness with real symptoms.
Scientific studies have shown that chemicals in the brain, that control mood, can be changed due to severe or long lasting stress. Chemicals in the brain that control memory or mood can run in the family, which means they can be inherited from one or both parents. Plus, certain environmental factors like a trama or significant events may trigger an anxiety disorder in people who have these disorders running thru their family histories.
People who have these disorders in their family run a four to seven times increased risk of getting or having these panic disorders.

Treatment Plans and Interventions for Depression and Anxiety Disorders
Treatment Plans and Interventions for Depression and Anxiety Disorders
"Treatment Plans and Interventions for Depression and Anxiety Disorders provides clinicians with essential guidelines to treat patients in the era of managed care. Seven psychiatric disorders are described and conceptualized in cognitive-behavioral terms. The authors then provided an unusually clear, reader-friendly description of how to assess and treat each disorder with illustrative case examples, and patient forms and handouts. It should prove very useful for clinicians or clinicians-in-training who want to learn how to conduct short-term treatment through an empirically validated approach." --Judith S. Beck, PhD, Director, Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research

Customer Review
I am a second year MSW student who works in a mental health clinic. I have found this book to be extremely helpful and practical in the treatment of depressive and anxiety disorders. My supervisor even purchased a copy of this book after she saw my work. Clients respond well to the interventions suggested, and they feel like they are finally being understood. It also forces the worker to be thorough in their work.

- Stress or Anxiety can often feel like a thick fog has surrounded
your mind. Nothing really seems enjoyable as you are
always looking out at the world through this haze of
anxious thoughts and feelings. This fog steals the joy
out of life and can make you feel removed
or cut off from the world.
When someone is very caught up in anxious thoughts
they are top heavy so to speak. The constant mental
activity they are engaged in has caused an imbalance
where all of their focus is on their mental anxieties.
A powerful way to move out of this anxious
mental fog is to switch your focus from your head
to your heart.
By simply making a deliberate shift of attention to your heart
you will find the anxious thoughts dissipate more easily
and the mental fog starts to gradually clear.

- A helpful resource -- I thought I'd read that MORE than 18% of all Americans suffer from some sort of Anxiety disorder or panic attacks. There are a lot of 'closet' sufferers, particularly men who are perhaps not comfortable letting others know that they suffer from panic attacks or anxiety -- it's not just a woman's issue. Great job on an informative lens!
