What's So Important About Anxiety Remedies?

Even Superman Had to Deal with Anxiety

No matter who you are, we all have anxiety.

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is fear. Other synonyms we use are, "worried", "low self confidence", and "reluctant". It has to do with the future. If we at some level, imagine something is going to happen that is undesirable in the future; that creates anxiety.

How is it that Superman could suffer anxiety?

Remember kryptonite? Remember Lois Lane?

If Superman started to imagine that the world was doomed because he couldn't escape the power of kryptonite, he would be dealing with a form of anxiety.

If Superman started to believe that Lois Lane was going to drop him for Spiderman, he would certainly become anxious.

Whenever a person starts to create images with the mind's eye that the future is scary, we are going to feel anxious.

Say that Superman became reluctant to fight crime because he was constantly afraid that all the villains would carry kryptonite around with them. We might say that Superman was suffering from GAD; Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

Say that Superman, because of the kryptonite, got so anxious that he found it difficult to breath and his heart started racing to the point that he mistakenly even concluded that this reaction could destroy him. That's called panic. Now imagine that he worried from then on that he might panic again to the point of causing himself to panic over panicking. Superman would be suffering from panic attacks.

Another example. What if Superman became immobilized every time he came in contact with a rock similar in form to the kryptonite that threatened him and the world he protected. Maybe a psychotherapist would tell Superman that he had a rock phobia. Phobia's are fear having to do with future thoughts as well.

No matter whether we are a superhero or a plain ole' Joe or Jane, if we don't have tools, what we're here calling anxiety remedies, then we are not going to live super lives. Instead, we'll be living lives half lived, as they say. We're not inclined to be our best, give our best, or feel our best. Our potential went from "super" to "in the pooper".

Are Pills Good Anxiety Remedies?

Vitamins, Herbs, and Medicine

You may have heard of so-called herbal remedies such as Kava Kava, St. Johns Wart, Valerian Root, passionflower, lemon balm, and lavender; to name a few.

Do these help?

Yes, to a small degree they can make some difference as long as you aren't combining other medicines and alcohol with them. Most authorities will tell us that they are relatively safe alternatives that could help out.

But now think about it, if the body is not producing sufficient serotonin and other calming neurotransmitters, because our thoughts are causing adrenalin and other "fight or flight" chemicals, how is an herb going to make much difference?

If the brain says, "Hey, danger ahead!", and we try to mask if over with a "light" tranquilizer, aren't we rebelling against what are own inner communication is directing?

It's kind of like whispering to ourselves, "Go ahead. That "stop sign or red light" isn't that important. You don't have to change what you're doing."

Anxiety is actually a signal. True, the "dangerous thoughts" may be just imagined, nevertheless, they're there. And that makes it real for us.

What about medication, can it help?

We hear a lot about Valium, Xanax, BuSpar. Some even use aniti-depressant drugs for anxiety such as Paxil, Prozac, and Zoloft. Others even experiment with Soma; a muscle relaxer.

They can certainly offer some relief. Obviously, or they wouldn't be such popular anti-anxiety remedies. With the proper medical direction, some of these anti-anxiety medications may even be appropriate.

However, again, what about your thinking? No matter how much we force serotonin levels to remain high or no matter how relaxed the muscles, we still have thoughts in our minds that are real to us. Eventually, those thoughts will probably win out. That's called, "side effects".

Your mind and your thoughts will not be denied. At some point your mind will demand that you heed the signals, even if it has to get your attention in other ways.

For the most part, all pills including supplements and medication are only very temporary band-aids.

That being said, it is noteworthy that at times a person's mind will correct the thought pattern on it's own if you get some temporary relief. In other words, if Superman would have received anti-anxiety medicine maybe eventually he would have figured out emotionally that Lois was just talking to Spiderman to get another news scoop. She's not going anywhere.

There's no intention to make light of high anxiety, we're using the Superman metaphor simply to make the point that, the root of the problem of anxiety disorders, and all anxiety for that matter, lies with how mind is processing thought about the future.

Change the thought, change your anxiety level. Drugs or not.

Food and Rest as An Anxiety Remedy

If We Are What We Eat, What Foods Are Calm, Confident and Relaxed?

First of all, as mentioned above, generally speaking, nothing we take into our mouths will change our thoughts about the future. Eat a donut, tomorrow still looks bad. Eat broccoli, tomorrow still looks bad, and as long as we see tomorrow as bad with the mind's eye, there will be anxiety.

That being clear, foods do have different properties that do contribute to the body's supplies of resources that make it possible to create the proper neurotransmitters that help the body feel tranquil, serene, and relaxed.

You do two things; 1 - Cut down on simple carbs and saturated fats that may rob the body's resource pool, and 2 - increase the intake of lettuce of any kind, root vegetables such as potatoes, turnips, carrots, etc., the different varieties of squash, and whole grains including corn.

And here's the trick that makes the big difference; eat those foods from after lunch through the rest of the day. Save the proteins such as meat for the first part of the day.

Here's why -- The proteins contribute to the dopamine family of neurotransmitters and the lettuce, root vegetables, and grains contribute to the serotonin family of neurotransmitters. We need both. What's important is that cycle; dopamine in the first part of the day and serotonin in the latter half of the day.

Also, cycle your day's activities similarly -- Stimulating activities in the first part of the day and relaxing wind down activities the second half of the day.

Actually, it works more like the four seasons. Spring is the morning, Summer is noon time. Autumn is evening, and night time is Winter.

Respect the seasons of the day accordingly. Autumn is time to wind down and let the serotonin do it's thing. Eating and living a life style that works with the natural cycles of life will help out much in the area of reducing general anxiety levels of the body because we are cooperating with how the human body is naturally regulated.

How important would it be to follow a course like this?

Thoughts first, lifestyle second, and food last. Everything matters to some degree, but nothing ever comes before the thoughts we have for the future. Our thinking is way more important.

Quite frankly, we probably can't get any of these things in order perfectly. Who reasonably is going to cycle their food and their day's activities exactly as we mentioned? The best we could hope for is to follow a system like this over 51% of the time. Let's face it, life happens. Even the strictest most disciplined advocates of this anti-anxiety diet system will admit that they feel fortunate to live by it even a small percentage of the time.

Psycho Therapists, Psychologists, and Life Coaches

Tell Me How to Feel and Teach Me How to Feel That Way

Yes, professionals definitely can administer great anxiety therapy. Some better than others.

Interestingly though, most humans are not inclined to ask for help from a professional with something like anxiety. We have no problem asking a dentist for help with a tooth ache or a doctor with skin rash, but a professional that examines us on how we feel? That's just crazy.

And it's too bad too, because 20 minutes with the right professional could be the best anxiety therapy you'll ever get.

Of course, many of these professionals have encapsulated themselves into books. If nothing else, get a book or e-book designed as an anxiety remedy.

A couple of hours of reading may give you what you need to turn yourself back in to Superman, or simply back into the regular ole' Joe or Jane that you are when you are not putting up with high levels of anxiety.
