Recognizing an Anxiety Symptom

How do you recognize anxiety symptoms? Just living in today's world means that almost everyone is going to experience times of unease, mild stress, and even panic. You need to be able to understand the difference between the challenges of today's life, as opposed to anxiety symptoms.

For some people anxiety symptoms come and go and for other people they are a constant presence everyday.

Anxiety symptoms can also emerge in a very physical way. Symptoms such as shortage of breath, sickness, diarrhoea, frequent urination, and heart palpitations are some of those. This last one, of heart palpitations, also experienced as an irregular heart beat, can lead an anxiety sufferer to believe that a heart attack is imminent. Obviously this greatly heightens the experience of anxiety, which brings into force the other symptoms even more. This can then become a full blown panic attack.

The symptoms of anxiety can be both psychological and physical. They can be of a general nature are very specific. Despite the variation, it's quite possible that different people will be given the same diagnosis of having anxiety disorder.

Anxiety symptoms often include some kind of insomnia. If this is the case then it really gets in the way of practical everyday living as not only do you have anxiety, but now, you also have a state of exhaustion resulting from lack of sleep. This can then create complications in other symptoms of anxiety. There may also be confusion and irritability.

Another anxiety symptom which can be particularly embarrassing is when there are chills or hot flashes or even extreme sweating. Add muscle tension and tremors into the equation and this all leads to a very uncomfortable and disconcerting condition.

Anxiety symptoms can also be restlessness, insecurity, a tendency to argue with other people and wanting to avoid certain social situations. This self-consciousness tends to feed on itself, so the anxiety suffered develops more and more of these symptoms unless something is done about it.

The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook

The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook
(Anxiety & Phobia Workbook)

This book excels not only in explaining the cause and nature of anxiety disorders and phobias but also in describing treatments. Director of the Anxiety Treatment Center in Santa Rosa (California), Bourne emphasizes the cognitive-behavioral model of treatment but includes information on biopsychiatry, intense psychotherapy, and spirituality as additional treatment modalities. This is truly a "workbook," with exercises designed to facilitate recovery, either through private use or in conjunction with professional therapy. If your library already owns the 1990 edition and money is an object, you can probably pass on this revision, which updates the definitions of anxiety and phobia so that they conform with the new DSM-IV diagnostic criteria and includes new information on the biological causes of anxiety and related treatment developments. However, if your collection lacks a good lay reader's book on anxiety and phobia, this is an excellent choice.?Jennifer Amador, Central State Hosp. Medical Lib., Petersburg, Va.
