While many theories on the subject exist, the only underlying cause for a panic attack is anxiety but as to what the cause of the anxiety is well, it could be almost anything. Controlling the anxiety which leads to a panic attack may take some time but the trigger to this event must be recognized so a method to stop it from happening can be devised.
The aim is to recognize that a trigger does not mean a panic attack and that no matter how strong the urge is to panic, it will no longer happen. Eradicating panic attacks is an all or nothing aim as no-one should have to suffer with this constant fear.
A panic attack might be caused by another condition like depression which can in itself be the result of frustration about a situation or even guilt although sometimes it is caused by fear or anger. Research has proved one thing though, and that is that the panic attack condition and the feelings it instills are all controlled within a certain section of the brain and fall under the medical term of general anxiety disorders.
A specific factor that can cause panic attacks is the work environment especially if it is a stressful position so definitely not a good idea for someone with symptoms of GAD. Anyone that suffers from anxiety will feel under much more pressure in this type of environment and is more likely to succumb to an anxiety attack.
Rapid but shallow breathing is a good indication that someone may be having an anxiety attack and they may have very strong feelings about their own mortality. This is the reason for the classic breathing into a bag as it controls breathing by inhaling more carbon dioxide and not so much oxygen and this is normally enough to stop the attack but controlling breathing is the key.
Breathing exercises can be practiced and once this has been learned it is only a matter of initiating what they have learned to control and then end the anxiety attack. This involves inhaling for two seconds while pushing the stomach out and exhaling for another two seconds; this is repeated for as long as possible.
Concentrating on just breathing makes the mind focus on just that one thing and thought of not being in control will disappear. The symptom of the panic attack becomes the hyperventilation which can be controlled by breathing exercises which means that the attack will subside very quickly once this has been achieved. If for some reason this method is not working then a doctor's advice and attention needs to be sought so the condition does not persist.

Sometimes it is necessary to take a combination of drugs as this is the most effective method of controlling the problem. So the patient may find themselves on more than one type of medication to help alleviate the depression.
In addition to this, the dosages can actually be increased or lowered depending on what the doctor finds to be the most effective. However, when it comes to taking these drugs, patients are highly advised to never mix up depression medications; as well as change which dosages to take without consulting their doctors first. In the past, depression patients have mistaken sedatives and anti-anxiety pills for anti-depressants with bad results so this is something to be avoided. While they may be of help in combination with other anti-depressants medications, they are not designed for curing the condition.
Used only to help relax the patient, it means that any other depression medication should still be used as prescribed. Although still used quite regularly, it is the tricyclics that cause the most commonly seen side-effects.
