What Is Anxiety And What Causes Anxiety

Causes of Panic Attacks

More than 40 million American adults suffer from some type of anxiety disorder, but what is anxiety?

Anxiety is a feeling similar to fear, but whereas a person knows what they are scared of they do not always know what they are anxious about. You have a feeling of unease and cannot always determine the reasons for it. Anxiety is a perfectly natural emotion, so your question "what causes anxiety?" should be replaced with "what causes unnecessary anxiety?" There is a common belief that anxiety disorders are caused by the following reasons:

* Heredity - there is evidence to show that anxiety disorders run in families. Further, it has been shown that if one identical twin suffers from an anxiety disorder the second twin is more likely to suffer an anxiety disorder than fraternal (non-identical) twins. This evidence suggests that a genetic factor has an influence.

* Brain Chemistry - Scientists believe that chemistry plays a role in anxiety disorders due to the fact that medications that alter the chemical levels within the brain help relieve a persons anxiety disorder.

* Personality - Researchers have noted that people with low self-esteem and poor coping skills may be more prone to anxiety disorders. It is also thought that an anxiety disorder that begins at childhood can itself contribute to low self-esteem.

* Life Experiences - Researchers suggest that the relationship between an anxiety disorder and long term exposure to things such as violence, poverty and forms of abuse may also alter a persons susceptibility to anxiety disorders.

Regardless of the cause, your anxiety disorder can be treated naturally without medication. Learn more!
