AnxietyTreatments: What's on Offer?

Anxiety is fast becoming one of the most prevalent conditions in human beings today particularly in the western world, and as a result there's an increasing diversity of anxiety treatments available and being recommended by both professional and lay people alike.

Some of the most popular anxiety treatments are anti anxiety medication, traditional anxiety treatments and cognitive behavioral therapy. Anxiety by nature is a condition that develops over a fairly long period of time and for that reason it is unwise to think that any anxiety treatment is going to have an overnight effect. Don't worry, however, because although it may take time to become completely free from anxiety, the symptoms of anxiety can be dealt with fairly quickly.

Many people choose to go down the road of anxiety medication. Although these do work, as with most drugs, they may also come with side-effects. Some are worse than others. The immediate benefit of anti anxiety drugs and antidepressants is that they do reduce the chances of anxiety attacks.

The first place you need to look in order to become free from anxiety is to see what kind of food and drink you are putting into your body. The western diet is not conducive to a stress free life. There are so many chemicals present in processed food, particularly preservatives and MSG as well as pesticides and hormones that are used in food production. For that reason try to purchase natural, fresh and even organic vegetables and meat. Avoid processed foods.

It has become more readily accepted by established nutritionalists and dieticians that a diet full of high water content food such as fresh and leafy vegetables is good for overall health but also to reduce the chances of anxiety.

Anxiety Treatment the Natural Way

There are several ways of dealing with anxiety in a natural way, without using pharmaceuticals. Some of these involve therapy, some using a machine that creates a conducive atmosphere, and others are herbal treatments.

Two of the most popular herbal treatments are Damiana and Valarian Root.

  • Damiana has the effect of calmness on the body, which correspondingly makes for a calm state of mind. Just one important consideration before taking this herbal treatment is that it must not be taken by pregnant women.

  • Valarian Root is considered by many herbalists and alternative therapists to be a natural Prozac, but without the side-effects. It's particularly good for reducing stress and dealing with insomnia.

  • There are also several other herbal remedies that are worth considering as well as looking at the range of vitamin supplements that will help to make your body healthier, stronger and more relaxed.

  • Before you embark on any natural treatment, bear in mind that some of these herbs are very powerful and so first see a specialist who will recommend the precise kind of treatment that is ideally suited for your personal condition.

Anxiety Treatment with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy is an excellent long-term treatment for anxiety. It is an umbrella term to describe therapy for changing defective behavioral patterns and thinking that leads to anxiety. It is a case of observing a person's behavior to see what is causing them to become stressed, anxious and worried. As well as observation, it can include hypnosis, meditation, group therapy and the Emotional Freedom technique.

  • Hypnosis is away for a hypnotist to get to the root cause of why someone is suffering from anxiety. There may well be some traumatic events that occurred in the person's childhood life, which are the cause of their current condition. By understanding these occurrences, the hypnotist can then suggest some alternative beliefs that will replace the negative ones that the individual has.

  • Meditation is a practice that the individual can learn by themselves or even in groups and is an excellent way to general relaxation as well as mental well-being. Sometimes it involves deep breathing exercises and other times it involves thinking in a very positive and focused way.

  • Group therapy is also highly recommended as an anxiety treatment. It is a chance for the person suffering from anxiety to share experiences, and find out what is working for other people who have suffered the same condition. In this it is important that there is someone present in the group who can keep the whole theme on a very positive level.

  • Emotional Freedom technique is a lesser known way of dealing with anxiety. It's a method whereby the therapist will realign the vibrational energy of the body, which has gone out of its natural state due to one reason or another. By putting the vibrational state back to its original condition, anxiety will be reduced and can even be eliminated altogether. This technique is probably more for those who have faith in the alternative therapy field rather than those who are very dependent on modern medicine.

Any of the above techniques and methods can be very useful for someone suffering from anxiety. One thing they all have in common is that they will reduce the heart rate and lower the blood pressure, which in itself is good for overall health.

Anxiety is a psychological and physiological state characterized by cognitive, somatic, emotional, and behavioral components.Seligman, M.E.P., Walker, E.F. & Rosenhan, D.L. (2001). Abnormal psychology, (4th ed.) New York: W.W. Norton & Company, Inc. These components combine to create an unpleasant feeling that is typically associated with uneasiness, fear, or worry.

Anxiety is a generalized mood condition that occurs without an identifiable triggering stimulus. As such, it is distinguished from fear, which occurs in the presence of an observed threat. Additionally, fear is related to the specific behaviors of escape and avoidance, whereas anxiety is the result of threats that are perceived to be uncontrollable or unavoidable.Ohman, A. (2000). Fear and anxiety: Evolutionary, cognitive, and clinical perspectives. In M. Lewis & J. M. Haviland-Jones (Eds.). Handbook of emotions. (pp.573-593). New York: The Guilford Press.

Another view is that anxiety is "a future-oriented mood state in which one is ready or prepared to attempt to cope with upcoming negative events" suggesting that it is a distinction between future vs. present dangers that divides anxiety and fear.

Anxiety is considered to be a normal reaction to stress. It may help a person to deal with a difficult situation, for example at work or at school, by prompting one to cope with it. When anxiety becomes excessive, it may fall under the classification of an anxiety disorder.National Institute of Mental Health Retrieved September 3, 2008.
