Anybody Can Sing Karaoke!

A karaoke revolution is taking place. No longer relegated only to seedy bars and dark, smoke-filled rooms, karaoke has become a fun activity for everyone. With more households purchasing complete karaoke packages for their homes and karaoke becoming increasingly popular on the latest video game systems, everyone can explore their inner Mariah Carey or Michael Bublé.

Karaoke Systems as Family Bonding Tools?

Have you ever sung karaoke? I love it. It's one of my favorite things to do. There isn't much that I enjoy more than getting together with a group of friends and singing karaoke. Yes, singing happens to be a talent of mine, but one of the great things about karaoke is that you don't have to be a great singer to do it. Many of my friends couldn't carry a tune in a bucket (bless their hearts). But that's what makes it fun. We all throw our reservations out the window and just have fun. Nobody expects world-class talent. When most of us think of karaoke, we think of seedy bars or night clubs, smoky, dimly-lit rooms, and people that have had far too much to drink croaking out an 80's hit with a drink in one hand and microphone in the other. Fortunately, with the recent growing popularity of karaoke (owing largely to the increasing availability of karaoke systems and the appearance of karaoke video games on popular platforms like the Nintendo Wii and Microsoft's Xbox 360), karaoke has emerged into the light. And for people like me, who don't enjoy hanging out in the types of locations mentioned above, this is like a breath of fresh air.

Now families can enjoy singing karaoke together. From toddlers to old fogies, karaoke is a wonderful and wholesome activity the whole family can enjoy. Many families are choosing to purchase karaoke systems for their homes. It's now easier than ever to choose from a wide variety of complete karaoke packages for your home. And businesses, from restaurants to youth centers, are finding that karaoke is a great way to add value and keep their customers coming back regularly. Many businesses find that not only do their customers come back repeatedly, but they also bring new friends with them on subsequent visits, therefore increasing the business' exposure and clientele.

Cross-cultural Karaoke

I love to travel. I have traveled all over the world and have lived in some pretty exotic places. One advantage of all of this is that I have been able to see how other people and other cultures do things. One of the places I have lived is Mongolia. Mongolians love to sing karaoke. And in my humble opinion, Mongolians know how to do it right. In a typical American karaoke setting, the person at the microphone sings a solo, like you would expect to see at a concert. In Mongolia, the person at the microphone sings the first few bars of the song alone and then the whole crowd joins in and sings the rest of the song together. This creates a very comfortable atmosphere for even the most self-conscious of tone-deaf singers. And for those confident, budding Beyoncés, they can still sing into the microphone as loudly as they would like to show off their talent. I sometimes institute "Mongolian rules" when I host a karaoke party in order to encourage all to participate.

My singing voice is quite lethal and it seems my whole family has the same gene. :) They do look like fun though.

My neighbors used their karaoke system 2 times a year on holidays. It was really loud, but they had so much fun. I just haven't been able to get up the nerve to do it. Funny too since I lead the singing at church.
