My Opera Journey

How To Sing Opera

That's Me!When I was a teenager I played in a rock band.

We were uhh... ok.

(That's Me Singing Handel!) ----->

Once I got to college I didn't know what the heck to do with myself.

Study music, I guess.

I auditioned and my singing was so bad that they just looked at each other and said.

"Take some lessons and come back in a year."

So I did!

I got in to the classical singing program on probation and wound up getting so good it even surprised me!

Anyway, opera has this big mystique around it but you know what?

Anybody can sing opera.

Seriously.

It's simply a matter of doing a few fundamental things correctly.

I spent countless hours reading books about singing, visiting laboratories (nerdy, huh?), singing professionally and teaching people to sing.

I found that I could teach anybody to sound like an opera singer after a few lessons.

So after watching Britain's Got Talent and seeing Susan Boyle and Paul Potts win and get so much great attention, it occurred to me that the average person loves the sound of opera.

So I created Sing Opera Now to teach people how to sing opera.

If you've ever thought you might like to sing opera, feel free to stop by my site and poke around.

Great Singing Resources Online

The internet is such a great place to learn a new skill that the future of libraries is looking kind of grim!

Here are some resources, free and paid that I recommend.
The Singing Zone

This is Per Bristow's Singing Site.

He gives out a lot of free information and makes videos with singers he's helped.

He really emphasizes deprogramming the cultural associations we have with sounding "bad" and simply allowing yourself to let go and make sound.

I love that and let me tell you, the psychological component in singing is HUGE!

Per has a great energy is and is just plain entertaining.

Every singer has to learn how to tune into their bodies and let things happen.

Per teaches this better than anybody out there.
Singorama

I like Singorama for three reasons:

1. It teaches you how to read music.

Singers are notoriously bad musicians.

Every singer who takes pride in what they do ought to learn the fundamentals of music just like any other instrument.

Singorama teaches sight reading progressively starting with super-easy exercises that they call "stories" and moving up at your own pace.

2. Teaches you to sing in harmony

This ties into general musicianship too.

A lot of good singers can only sing a solo line.

Learning to harmonize is really vital for singing with groups such as a chorus, band or acapella ensemble.

3. It's a "complete" solution for singers.

Singorama tackles all aspects of singing so that you can become a versatile performer.

In this day of increasingly mixing genres, singers trying to make a living from their craft need versatility.

I can tell you from experience that I've sung, taught, sang in a chorus and worked as a church musician all at the same time and that was just to keep the bills from eating me alive.

My versatility and musicianship are what made it possible for me to get paid to do what I love and make a living from it.

My Favorite Song Cycle

Operatic Technique

Ok, so I know this isn't technically opera.

But it IS classical singing and this is about operatic technique stylistically, not necessarily JUST opera proper.

This is a song cycle by Schumann called Dichterliebe or "A Poet's Love"

This music is haunting and romantic and unlike anything else.

Beautiful.

This is me, Vic Dorfman, showing ya'll how to sing opera!
