Welcome to "My" Desert
Hi everyone! I decided to create this lens because this is one of my favorite areas that I travel to on a regular basis.
This is a great area about 80 miles from San Diego or about 50 miles or so from the Coachella Valley. A very large state park encompasses most of the area. I will try to put as much info that a new visitor would need to know when they visit this park. I will also include info for desert areas surrounding the park as well as for Borrego Springs, the town in the center of the park.
Visiting the Desert:
When visiting the desert, please keep the following in mind:
For one, please check in with local officials in regards to the conditions of the area you plan to visit.
Also, be sure to carry plenty of water and food to last you beyond the time period you plan to stay.
And, please be considerate of other visitors and residents. Pick up your trash, don't camp or trespass on private property, and keep noise levels to a minimum.
I visit here often and sometimes refer to this place as my home without a house. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Just as a side note, there are WiFi services available now in the park. But, you have to be within 150 feet of the Ranger's office. WiFi may also be available at the Borrego Springs library located on the west side of the mall on Palm Canyon Drive.

Will Anza Borrego Desert State Park Be Closed?
The politicians in Sacramento are saying that they might have to close down the state parks, including Anza Borrego Desert State Park, due to budget problems. First of all, there are no gates, barriers, roadblocks that block the roads in this area, so you will still be able to drive through the park on the paved roads. The entire town of Borrego Springs is surrounded by the park and the roads have to be open for people to come and go.So, most likely, the roads will still be open to sight-see, photograph, and enjoy. However, what might happen is that the visitor's center may close completely and any educational programs or hikes would cease. The developed campgrounds at Palm Canyon and Tamarisk Grove would probably close, also, unless some other funding becomes available. It might also mean less ranger patrols in the area, too, which would put a hike in the remote areas more risky.
In the past, the park has been able to make up budget shortfalls by charging a fee for all activities that take place off the paved highways. They usually gave a break to hikers and bikers. This may be a likely scenario this year, but I cannot confirm this.
So, if you are planning a trip to the Anza Borrego Desert in the near future, you will still be able to enjoy it, but it may cost you some fees or be more risky. I will try to keep everyone updated on this. Right now, this is all speculation based on what had been done in the past.

Observations and Tips on the Current Season
I am looking forward to summer visits for thunderstorm and cloud shots.
My Last Trip
Description of my last trip to the area.
My last trip was in early to mid April 2009. I took an extra long trip down the California Riding and Hiking Trail from the S-22 to just north of the Angelina Spring in Grapevine Canyon. I wanted to get close to the area that I had ridden my bike about a year before, in Grapevine Canyon and I managed to get within view of it.This hike was a lot more strenuous than the previous two hikes I had done in the southern end of the Anza-Borrrego Desert State Park. The first half was mostly going downhill, only I didn't know it until I got well into Grapevine Canyon as it was mostly a gently slope. Then, it dropped sharply down to the canyon floor. The climb back up from the jeep road to the Jasper Valley was steep and hard.
Along the way, I saw a lot of flowers; they were everywhere. The yellow flowers blanketed the area, but there were also some tiny white, purple, pink, and blue flowers. They even overgrown the trail which looked like it was hardly used. I didn't see a whole lot of bees in the area pollinating them, but that could be because it was cold and windy that day.

Yellow flowers blanketed the Jasper Valley area.
Photos and Artwork based on the Anza-Borrego Area
Places I've visited and done artwork about.
These are photos of various places I have visited in the area. I have also added artwork to this set, too.
Weather in Borrego Springs
Here is the weather for right now!
Travel Deals to the Region
I just wanted to add this in order to help anyone from outside the region find their way to the area. Open camping is allowed throughout the park, but there are some hotels there if you want to stay.
Borrego Springs' airport is a small airport that doesn't support jet traffic. Therefore, it is usually best to fly to San Diego or Palm Springs for the shortest drive to the area.
Deals to Palm Springs
I thought I would add this module for those who might like to stay in a more populated area while visiting the entire desert region.
The travel to and from both San Diego and Palm Springs is about 80 miles.
Books on the Anza-Borrego Desert
These are some of my favorites.
Anza-borrego Desert Region: A Guide to State Park & Adjacent Areas of the Western Colorado Desert
This is a classic. It also comes with a very accurate map. I have an older version and it's completely worn out.
Fossil Treasures of the Anza-Borrego Desert
This is a great book on the natural history of the area. The parks visitor's center also includes information on this subject. Very entertaining and informative.
Anza-Borrego A to Z: People, Places, and Things
A great book for general info on the historical aspect of the area.
My Guestbook.
This is where you can write your comments and let me know what you think. It is also a place where you can make suggestions and ask questions.

I live in Corona, and me and my wife like to visit trails that are out the way and not very visited. We found the Wilderness Gardens and saw them yesterday. Ruins of an old mill, ponds, etc., it's a very nice place. It's amazing how much So Cal has in the way of stuff like this. Good lens. Anza Borrego is on our list, but now the heat is coming!
