Apartment Design without Paint or Nails

Ranked #15,255 in Home & Garden, #215,253 overall

When Renting an Apartment

When you are renting an apartment, you may find that you are not allowed to touch the walls, and that means no paint and no nails. While your first thought may be that you are going to be stuck living in a lackluster apartment, nothing could be further from the truth. Just because you cannot paint, does not mean that your rooms will be devoid of color, and just because you cannot use nails does not mean that you cannot decorate. You just have to think outside the box.

Adhesive Products

Lucky for you, there are products that you can use to hang pictures and paintings that will not leave a mark on the walls. Adhesive hooks are easy to use: By just peeling off the protective backing, the hook can be stuck to the wall, and then you can hang pictures and lightweight objects like dragonfly metal wall decor as you normally would. Adhesive products may not be suitable however for heavy objects oversize metal art sculptures.

For lighter objects or smaller pictures, you can use putty that is designed to stick to the wall and not leave a mark. Simply knead the putty in your hand to get it pliable, and then press it to the wall for about thirty seconds until it sticks. Each type of putty is a little different so be sure to check the instructions to make sure that you achieve a tight hold.

Fabric on the Walls

To add some color to the walls, you can hang fabric, and the wonderful thing about fabric is that you can cover very large areas with material and really add some color to a room. Using your adhesive hooks, you can hang fabric on a rod, or you can stretch fabric over a piece of foam board to create a lightweight, fabric panel, which you can hang with adhesive hooks. You can also use a fabric starch solution to adhere the fabric to the walls. As you are determining how much of your wall you want to cover with fabric, remember that it is sold by the yard, so factor that into your measurements as you are calculating how much fabric to buy.

Paper Tape Design

A really simple and fun way to decorate a room is to use paper tape. You can find it in an art supply or craft store, and paper tape sticks to the wall until you take it down. It does not mar the wall, and it is available in different widths and colors. You can make any number of designs on the walls, and then simply peel them off when you are ready to move on.

Poster Covered Walls

Use wall putty to hang colorful posters. If they are framed, you can use the adhesive hooks to hang them. You can also use poster tape, which you can usually get wherever you get your posters. This tape will neatly stick your posters to the wall without harming the walls in any way.

Vinyl Letters and Decals Cling to Wall

Another fun way to decorate your walls without painting is to use vinyl letters and decals. You can spell out fun or inspirational words or create a design pattern or stencil with images. When you are done, simply pull them off of the wall, and they will not leave any mark behind at all.
