Anne Frank was a thirteen year old girl who lived in a secret annex inside her family's home in Amsterdam during World War II. Her family hid for two years before they were discovered and arrested by the Nazis.

Unfortunately, most of the Frank family died during the war, including Anne herself. Her father survived, and as a legacy to Anne and a reminder of the horrible treatment the Jewish people were shown by the authorities, her father published the diary she kept to amuse herself during hiding. The book, The Diary of Anne Frank is one of the most important accounts of life during the war.

The Anne Frank Museum is dedicated to telling Anne's story. Inside the Frank family home, you can view her original diary and the secret annex where she lived for two years before being discovered.

The oldest zoo in the Netherlands with more than 700 species of animals is on display at the Artis Zoo- right in the centre of town! As well as the animals, the complex has a Botanic Garden, Geological Museum, Planetarium, Butterfly Garden and an Aquarium, including an interesting display of life in Amsterdam's city canals! A great day out for families!

Open from 9am-5pm. Entry for adults is 17.50 euros, children under 9 are 14 euros.

Van Gough Museum

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) was one of the world's famous post-impressionist painters, but he suffered from mental illness. He is famous not only for his beautiful paintings but also for cutting off his own ear shortly before committing suicide.

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is the World's largest collection of Vincent Van Gogh's work, including 200 paintings, 437 drawings and 31 prints. The museum also has a great collection of 19th Century art.

Open 10am-6pm Monday to Friday. Open until 10pm on Friday evenings.
