What Can Cause Aplastic Anemia?

The causes of aplastic anemia often depend on the case of each patient.

Various conditions affect each person differently. The disease commonly affects the red and spongy cavity inside the bone, which is known as the bone marrow.

The bone marrow contains stem cells that work closely with each other to produce the three types of blood cells (red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets). A constant and regular production of enough healthy blood cells is required so that the older blood cells will be replaced. With aplastic anemia, the amount of new blood cells is negative because the bone marrow is damaged.

Medical studies have found that radiation, drugs (like chloramphenicol), insecticides (Benzene-based compounds), and other environmental toxins (airplane glue) may potentially an aplastic anemia cause. In some patients, the disease may be caused by a certain virus.

Some Common Symptoms of Aplastic Anemia

When there is a shortage of one or all types of blood cells, some common symptoms in patients would be any of the following:

*Headache
*Dizziness
*Skin rashes
*Prolonged bleeding from cuts
*Bleeding of the nose
*Bleeding of the gums
*Easy bruising
*Prolonged or frequent infections
*Abnormally pale skin
*Rapid heart rate
*Shortness of breath with mild exertion
*Fatigue

Treatment Options

The development of aplastic anemia may be slow or rapid. The disorder may be chronic or brief. One thing is certain-it will become fatal without treatment.

Treatment options for mild cases of the illness are blood transfusions and medications. For serious cases, bone marrow transplantation is the only alternative.

Blood transfusion is only a temporary cure but it helps relieve the symptoms like fatigue and bleeding. Because the disease may be caused by malfunctions of the immune system, medications (like immunosuppressants) are given to patients to help restrain the immune cells that attack the bone marrow. This option is often given to patients with advanced age and who have no donor matched for bone marrow transplant.

Treatment by transplant involves replacement of damaged bone marrow with a healthy one. In about 4 out of 5 cases, aplastic anemia is treated without recurrence.
