What is Aplastic Anemia?

Aplastic anemia is a rare disease that developed due to bone marrow failure in producing enough new blood cells (red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets) to replace the old ones.

However, the disorder is difficult to diagnose because many of aplastic anemia symptoms resemble those of other blood-related ailments. For instance, the traditional anemia is caused by low blood count of red blood cells only.

According to medical reports, aplastic anemia affects 2 to 6 per 1 million people in the United States every year.

There is a growing number of findings about the patients' history of exposure to toxic chemicals like benzene; thus health care professionals tend to perform appropriate tests for the disease whenever related symptoms are present.

Common Symptoms

Common symptoms of the aplastic anemia are:

*Low count of red blood cells - Not enough amount of oxygen in the blood may lead to heart failure and arrhythmias.
*Dizziness
*Shortness of breath
*Pale skin, nail beds, and gums
*Chest pain
*Headache
*Low count of white blood cells - This blood cell type helps the body to fight infections.
*Frequent infections
*Fevers
*Other flu-like illnesses
*Low count of platelets - These blood cells stick together to help stop bleeding and seal small wounds.
*Bruise easily
*Bleed easily
*Nosebleeds
*Bleeding gums
*Red pin-point spots in the skin
*Blood in the stool and urine
*Abnormally heavy menstrual bleeding

Other symptoms not related to low blood cell counts may include:

*Skin rashes
*Nausea or feeling sick in the stomach

Symptoms of PNH

About one-third of aplastic anemia cases also have a disorder of the red blood cell called paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH).

Most PNH patients do not show any signs; but when they do, symptoms may include:

*Headache
*Blood in the urine
*Shortness of breath
*Swelling and/or pain in the stomach
*Swelling and/or pain in the legs (caused by blod clotting)
*Jaundice (yellowish pigment in the eyes and/or skin)

Inherited disorders that could increase risk of aplastic anemia in children are:

*Fanconi Anemia
*Dyskeratosis Congenita
*Schwachman-Diamond Syndrome
*Amegakaryocytic Thrombocytopenia
