One of the best lists I've ever seen. 2 I'd include personally are "The Book Of Eli" which someone mentioned below and "Equilibrium" with Christian Bale, an excellent dystopian tale. Very good lens!

If you liked The Day After then Threads is certainly worth a watch.

Great lens and great content, well researched. I have to disagree completely with the below comment, 12 Monkeys is one of the best movies on this list. In terms of other Post Apocalyptic films: The Road would be one example (though not my favourite) and Children of Men may fit in one or two of those categories.
  • CalamariFritti Jul 20, 2011 @ 4:32 pm | delete
Great lens! Your reviews were right on the money for most listings. Glad I wasn't the only one disappointed by the second half of The Stand.

I would add to your list The Book of Eli, I am Legend, Brazil, and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.

A really good list with some that I haven't seen. I'll have to keep an eye out for them. I have to give a personal thumbs down on 12 Monkeys. Didn't like that movie at all, though it was quite well done.

I been looking for the title of a post-apocalyptic drama film made in Japan which is like the film On the Beach. It is about a Japanese family trying to survive the end of the world together and I think the title is something like The Last Flowers of Autumn or something like that. Do you know of this film if so what is it's real title.
  • whiskey Nov 15, 2010 @ 8:26 am | delete
One movie needs to be added:
    A Boy and His Dog.

Post apocalyptic perfection with an interesting story twist.

And if you really like apocalyptic situations, it's mandatory that you play Fallout. Preferably part 3 or this new one, but my goodness. Even if you're not a gamer, this game is THE BEST depiction of the end of times, and you get to live in its world! Even just watching a friend play is fun.

I'm always a big fan of John Wyndham's books, which are mostly apocalyptic, although I heard them well-characterized as "English cozy catastrophe." With that in mind, "The Day of the Triffids," original version, is well worth watching.
  • Mason Jul 17, 2010 @ 6:25 pm | delete
The Apocalyptic film from 1988, "Miracle Mile" (Anthony Edwards, with a cameo from Denise Crosby). VERY intense, and gave me nightmares for years. Worth watching, but on-the-edge-of-your-seat style.
  • phaxo Jul 17, 2010 @ 3:33 pm | delete
Agree with Bubbalou...The Quiet Earth was great too!
  • FatCatDeadRat Apr 19, 2010 @ 8:16 pm | delete
One that every one seems to have forgotten, A Boy and His Dog, a rather kinky tale of survival. It's hard to find now but it's worth watching, one of the central inspirations for the first Fallout game.
  • jaja Apr 19, 2010 @ 2:58 pm | delete
Doomsday. Bakshi's Wizards, City of Lost Children, and check out an unknown The Time of the Wolf, A french film by the guy who did the The Piano Teacher. It is probably the most realistic of the bunch, for some one who wants to really go there. And of course, The Road.
  • Noct Apr 1, 2010 @ 11:14 pm | delete
Oh... and one more which interestingly enough falls under all 3 categories.
    The Time Machine (2002 ver)
Sometimes you can't be a good classic like H.G. Wells...
  • Noct Apr 1, 2010 @ 11:08 pm | delete
By far, my favorite post apocalyptic film... The Road.
It doesn't have the fast paced action of some films, and it doesn't really address what political, natural, or social event(s) caused the world to fall apart.
However, it does an excellent job of engaging the viewer with the characters.
    Highly recommended.

  • Brooks May 18, 2009 @ 11:51 pm | delete
I think you have to include the 1964 film Fail-Safe and its brilliant black comedy spin-off Dr. Strangelove on your apocalyptic list.
  • Bubbalou Apr 30, 2009 @ 8:55 pm | delete
Great lens! How about The Quiet Earth (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089869/) though?
  • Cinnamonbite Apr 9, 2011 @ 11:30 am | delete
Wait! You watched, "The Quiet Earth?" It made sense to you? You liked it? I saw that in college and it totally made utterly no sense at all. And then it just...ended, like the writers ran out of ideas or the production ran out of money. Explain it to me. All I got out of it was 3 people survived...something. She fell for the other guy. They kill the original guy. The end. I'm pretty sure that no one else on the entire planet has seen this movie except of you and me so help me out, what was the plot?
  • Mike in Ontario, NY May 10, 2011 @ 11:47 am | delete
The Quiet Earth is one of the best, if not THE best, last-man-on-earth movies ever made.
  • Phoneix Mar 21, 2009 @ 8:37 pm | delete
How about Gattaca and man I forgot the name but its kinda like equilibrium where all books are banned and its based on this one guy that burns the books. I think books like the Giver would be a great movie.
I just saw an awesome movie called the Last winter its a really good apocalyptic movie and has alot to do with humanities struggle to contemplate this world is not our own but there are greater powers that let us exist. I think the list should be longer and have its own separate area for zombie like movies.

Gattaca isn't really post apocalyptic or dystopia. Society isn't destroyed and the government is not the cause of problems. It's just a look at using DNA to discriminate, kind of a social darwinism thing.
  • drew Mar 13, 2009 @ 11:01 pm | delete
Great list, I love the post-apocalyptic films, road warrior is up there as one of the best. (then went to total sh*t with thunder dome). Anyway just watched a film with an interesting take on the post-apocalypse, Wall-E, (yes the animated disney film), but it has a great vision of what humans do to the earth, with a lone robot left behind.. Actually much cooler than I thought it would be.
  • Victor May 4, 2010 @ 4:48 am | delete
Nice list. I am an absolutely great fan of (post) apocalyptic movies.
Here a few who could be mentioned:
The Matrix, Cloverfield, The Road, The Mist, Diary of the Dead (and a lot of other zombie movies), the Day of the Triffids, Akira, I am Legend
  • OPSUBoys2010 Mar 5, 2009 @ 8:08 pm | delete
Blade Runner and Dune would both fit well under dystopian.
  • Pufnstuf Mar 1, 2009 @ 8:18 pm | delete
excellent... But is Logan's Run post apocalyptic or dystopian?
  • nic Feb 28, 2009 @ 3:04 pm | delete
i think that Children of Men belongs on this list even though its in the transition between a stretched out apocalypse and the post apocalyptic world. everything is going down and everybody knows it. the only thing is that a spark of hope is provided which goes against the depressing aspects of a dying world

great list, only it needs Equilibrium to be on it :)
  • explicitbrain Dec 29, 2008 @ 3:13 am | delete
I would definitely add Equilibrium to the Dystopia list. Yeah it's an action heavy b-movie, but Christian Bale is great and the scenes where he rediscovers his emotions are great.
Also, when I think of The Day After, I think apocalyptic, not post-apocalyptic. Yeah it's called the day after because half the movie takes place after the nuclear explosions but considering the other half is about the actual apocalypse and that the second half is them dealing with the immediate fallout I'd say it definitely belongs in the apocalyptic category.
  • Ben Dec 26, 2008 @ 5:38 am | delete

I would add A boy and his dog.

Looking for a sci fi apocalypse movie from the 1980s were all the disasters of all the religions fall on the earth and it has the devil in it and this guy uses his girlfriend as bait in the sewers and he lives in London? I know its not much but I have someone who's looking for this movie.
    Thank You

I consider Battlefield Earth to be post-apocalyptic. Even though we didn't destroy ourselves the alien invasion was enough to cause us to go back to a primitive society and make up stories about Earths past civilization.

For Dystopia you missed out a real classic -Terry Gillingham's "Brazil". And whilst the film version is a bit rubbish Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" is excellent science fiction as well and should be mandatory reading.

what about "the postman"? great post-apocalypic movie dealing with different versions of society being rebuilt. also worth remembering is "cyborg",which is by far the best van damme movie(not saying much), but is a really good PO movie.

Virus (1980): a notable flop at the box office when it came out. I think it's actually one of the best in the genre.
