A Guide To The First Moon Landing - the Apollo 11 mission
- Otto Willi Gail, 1948 ("The Physics Of Space Travel").
In fact, NASA was starting to work on the moon missions just 10 years later!
Launched on 16th July 1969, the landing took place on the 20th, with the first moonwalk taking place later that day (EDT).

"One small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind"
Neil Armstrong gets there first!
Wikipedia:-
"It has since been claimed that acoustic analysis of the recording reveals the presence of the missing "a". A digital audio analysis conducted by Peter Shann Ford, an Australia-based computer programmer, claims that Armstrong did, in fact, say "a man", but the "a" was inaudible due to the limitations of communications technology of the time. Ford and James R. Hansen, Armstrong's authorized biographer, presented these findings to Armstrong and NASA representatives, who conducted their own analysis. The article by Ford, however, is published on Ford's own web site rather than in a peer-reviewed scientific journal, and linguists David Beaver and Mark Liberman at Language Log were skeptical of Ford's claims. Armstrong has expressed his preference that written quotations include the "a" in parentheses."
Overall, the mission went pretty well, with the exception of some communication problems during the descent to the moon, and some computer error codes flashing up in the final 30 seconds before landing. If the controller, Steve Bales, had not been on top form and remembered those error codes, then Neil Armstrong would have had to abort agonisingly close to the surface.
Incidentally, Gene Krantz mentions in his book "Failure Is Not An Option", that the very last simulation practice run before the real take-off ended in the "Abort" command being called with those very same alarm codes flashing up. The Simulation Supervisor then confirmed that they could have gone ahead and landed!
Buzz Aldrin
The Second Man On The Moon

There are no photographs of Neil Armstrong on the moon, apart from one where he is seen reflected in Buzz Aldrin's helmet visor. A great shame, since the television pictures were very poor (and black and white!).

Lunar Module Pilot's view

Although designated as "Lunar Module Pilot", Buzz Aldrin was more like the Flight Engineer, as the actual "flying" was done by the Commander - obviously Neil Armstrong in this case.
Training to fly this unusual craft was done with an equally unusual simulator, nicknamed the "flying bedstead" - a spindly-looking rig with a jet engine for vertical thrust. It was properly known by the catchy title of Lunar Landing Research Vehicle - LLRV for short.
Fixed in front of the window you can see the film camera that took the footage of the landing sequence - but it was only shooting 6 frames per second!

- What's my collection of astronaut signatures worth?
- ... of factors: Are the signatures on NASA photos? Are they just in their white space suits or actually walking on the Moon? The good news is a picture of Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins together is currently up for sale for £12500.

- Previously, we looked at the first batch of manned missions, Gemini III through VII, and now we've got the stories of Gemini VIII through XII, featuring the debut of Neil Armstrong, an emergency in space and one very angry alligator.
The Flying Bedstead
- or Lunar Landing Research Vehicle!

An earlier version of this was built in Britain and first flew in 1953, with one fatal accident in 1957.
Neil Armstrong had a close call with the LLRV, when the manoeuvring thrusters malfunctioned, and he had to swiftly eject. Despite this drama, he was back at work later that day, and hardly said a word about it.
NASA had built five of these trainers in all, two LLRVs and three LLTVs ("..Training Vehicle"), and three of these were destroyed in accidents - the other pilots also ejected safely.
The last part of every Apollo landing was manually piloted by the mission commander, and Armstrong said his mission would not have been successful without so much training on these unusual-looking vehicles. He ended up having to fly manually rather further than expected, due to navigation problems.

Neil Armstrong Training for the Lunar Landing
The realism of the training came to the fore in several missions where the navigation was slightly out (including Apollo 11), and the final approach had to be extended in order for the crew to find a safe landing site. They landed with only a few seconds of fuel remaining.
