A Look at Apolo Anton Ohno
Apolo Anton Ohno born to an American mother and Japanese father first became interested in short track speed skating when he watched it during the 1994 Olympics. He was just 14 years old at that time and his father began driving him to the different meets in northwest US and Canada. His father saw it as something that was positive for him and would keep him from getting into trouble.Apolo's father eventually got him to Lake PLacid to train full-time for short-track but Apolo showed very little commitment to training. Apolo did become the youngest ever US speed skating champion before returning home to Seattle.
A year later in 1998 Apolo had not continued to train. He had gain weight and with the lack of training he finished last at the Olympic trails that year. Apolo was devastated and as a final effort to get his son to commit, Apolo's father drove him to a cabin and left him there alone to think about his future. After 8 days Apolo realized that he needed to make a change if he wanted to succeed.
In 2000 Ohno became the first American to win overall World Cup champion and later Qualified to skate with the US team in the 2002 Olympics. Apolo saw great success in the 2002 Olympics by winning a gold medal in the 1500 m and a silver medal in the 1000 m.
In 2006 Apolo again Qualified to skate for the US team. During those Olympics Apolo won 3 more medals. He won his second Olympic gold skating the 500 m. He also won 2 bronze medals. One for the 1000 m and one for the 5000 m relay.
In 2007 Apolo Anton Ohno competed on the TV reality show called "Dancing with the Stars". It was the 4 season of the hit television show. He was partnered with professional dancer Julianne Hough. Together Apolo and Julianne won the competition that season.

Apolo Anton Ohno (born on May 22, 1982) is an American short track speed skating competitor and a five-time medalist (two gold, one silver, two bronze) in the Winter Olympics. He also competed in and won the reality TV show Dancing with the Stars in 2007.
Ohno has won five Olympic medals over his career and is one of only four Americans who has won three medals in a single Winter Olympics game. He is tied with Eric Heiden for most career medals at the Winter Games by an American man. He has been the reigning United States champion since 2001 and has won the men's national title a total of 10 times. In December 1999, he became the youngest skater to win a World Cup event title, and became the first American to win a World Cup overall title in 2001. In 2008, Ohno won his first overall World Championship title.
He was the United States Olympic Committee's Male Athlete of the Month in October 2003 and March 2008. He was named the U.S. Speedskating's Athlete of the Year for 2003 and was a 2002, 2003, and 2006 finalist for the Sullivan Award, which recognizes the best amateur athlete in the United States.
