A traditional dessert that is easy to make

Some of my fondest childhood memories are of my Grandma and I in the kitchen of her house, preparing her scrumptious Apple Brown Betty.

I remember spending what seemed like hours peeling, coring and slicing apples. She didn't believe in using those "newfangled gadgets"; her paring knife was all she needed.

This fabulous dessert was meant to compliment the meal. But if allowed, I would've made this a meal in itself.

Is it any wonder that this lip-smacking apple treat holds such a special place in my heart? And my belly.

As much as I'd like to give my dear Gran credit for this traditional dessert, it came about long before her.

What Is Apple Brown Betty?

A Brown Betty is a simple American dessert made from fruit (usually apples) and sweetened crumbs. It is thought to date back to Colonial times.

It consists of a baked pudding made with layers of sweetened and spiced fruit and buttered bread crumbs. It can be served with a ice cream, whipped cream or with nothing but a spoon.

Brown Betty is similar to a cobbler or a bread pudding. The most familiar version is the Apple Brown Betty, made with sliced apples and brown sugar. Other popular fruits to use are berries.

6 cups baking apples (e.g. Granny Smith)
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
3 Tablespoons lemon juice
1/4 cup water

Grease an 11 x 9 baking dish. Sprinkle approximately 1/3 of the breadcrumbs over the bottom of the baking dish. Place 1/2 of the apples over the bread crumbs.

Mix together the sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Sprinkle half of this sugar mixture over the apples. Add 1/3 of the breadcrumbs, another layer of apples, then sprinkle with the rest of the sugar mixture. Top with the final 1/3 of the breadcrumbs (you can also sprinkle oatmeal on top).

Splash the lemon juice and water over the top of the Apple Brown Betty. Cut the butter up in small chunks and place around on top of the apple casserole.
