Apple Holidays You Can Shout About!

Did you know that there are almost a dozen day-long apple holidays scattered throughout the year? There is also a National Apple Week and to top it off, National Apple Month actually spans September, October and November! If you're an apple lover . . . how cool is that?

It is said that apples are one of the most varied food on the planet . . . with more apple varieties on record than for any other fruit. As a matter of fact, there are literally hundreds of varieties grown in the United States alone.

How should you celebrate an apple holiday? Here are a few ideas you can use . . .

January 1: Apple Gifting Day

While the origins of this apple holiday is not known, take an opportunity to make a special apple concoction, wrap it creatively and give it as a gift to friends, family, neighbors, or co-workers.

Simple Applesauce Spice Cake

2 cups flour
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup sugar
1 cup applesauce (unsweetened)
1/3 cup oil or (softened butter)
1 cup raisins (optional)

Mix the sugar and apple sauce; add the fat. Mix the dry ingredients. Through a sifter, add them to the apple sauce mixture. Flour the raisins and stir them into the batter. Turn into a greased loaf-cake pan or into two layer-cake pans. Bake in a moderate oven (375 degrees F.). If the cake is baked in layers, put Raisin Filling between them, but omit the raisins in the cake batter.
