Scott McNulty at Tuaw.com said Apple sent out only a few iPhone review units, probably below 10.After months of hype and hoopla, Apple Inc. finally began selling the iPhone and, judging by the reaction at its flagship store in San Francisco, the combination of phone, media player and Internet communicator is a blockbuster hit. However, there are caveats, which include:
- Call quality seems to be average. Although this could be attributed as a fault of AT&T, AT&T is contractually synonymous with the iPhone for the time being, at least in the US.
- AT&T's EDGE network can be slow... very slow for web browsing. "You almost ache for a dial-up modem," according to David Pogue.
- The predictive texting and a virtual keyboard takes getting used to. Some people may not be able to do so. Again, David Pogue, when speaking with a product manager, was told to "use the Force." That, of course, meaning that he should concentrate less on each letter and more on overall text.
- No Java, no Flash, native application support limited to Apple, except through non-SDK AJAX in Safari.
- Some headphone jacks may not fit without adapters.
- The camera can't record video.

What the world says about iPhone
- Today @ PC World iPhone's Albatross: AT&T's EDGE Network
- Long before the iPhone circus started, analysts and tech enthusiasts were complaining about the wireless network chosen to connect the new device to the Internet, AT&T's EDGE Network. The Wall Street Journal review called the network "pokey," while the New York Times review termed it "excruciatingly slow."
The people over at Broadband Reports (BBR) have now put some real numbers behind those complaints: 5805 iPhone users have now used the BBR's online iPhone/EDGE speed test, and the results ain't pretty. - Ten Reasons Why You Shouldn't Buy an iPhone

1. I Got to the Apple Store Ahead of You - iPhone can't manage music!
- We're talking about the inability to manually manage music on an iPhone by connecting it to a computer, highlighting a band, album or song within iTunes and moving it to the iPhone icon. Apple, the company that practically invented the drag-and-drop, has consciously eliminated the feature from the iPhone. This decision effectively neuters the device because it removes capabilities that played a huge role in making the iPod the gee-whiz device that set the standard for portable music players.
If you want to load the new albums by Wilco or the White Stripes (both highly recommended, by the way), you'll have to create a playlist in iTunes first and then sync it with your iPhone. If you later decide you want to remove one of those albums from the device, you'll have to remove it from the iTunes playlist and sync again. - iPhone media blitz missed battery 'fee'
- The iPhone battery will only survive about 300-400 recharges, the company says. Because the unit is sealed, consumers can't swap out dead batteries. Instead, dead phones must be sent to Apple, where battery replacement will take three business days and cost $79 plus a $6.95 shipping charge. Those who can't live without their cell phones for those three days can rent a spare iPhone for $29.
- The Physics of iPhone
- The iPhone is not only a breakthrough handheld device, it is a device that brings a mesh of digital and physical to the masses. Apple achieved it by turning a phone (and ipod, video player and more) into software that creates a life-like experience, but also adds a digital lightness and playfulness. It is likely that we are going to see more devices that let us interact with information in this way. How does it suit you? If you have played with an iPhone, please let us know what you think. What other Digital Physics experiences in the iPhone did you find compelling?
Hack our iPhone to bypas AT&T sign up
- 'DVD Jon' cracks iPhone activation - vnunet.com
- Jon Lech Johansen, as he is otherwise known, posted a small software utility on his blog that edits code within the iPhone's system software.
By running the hack, Johansen said that iPhone owners can activate the Wi-Fi and iPod capabilities on the phone without needing to sign up to AT&T's mobile service. The phone services on the device will not be available, however.
