Apple iPod Touch 4G

Ranked #10,143 in Computers & Electronics, #206,451 overall

Introduction

I have created this Squidoo page because I have an Apple iPod Touch 4 Generation. I got mine for Christmas this past year. Mine's is an 8 GB, and I have found it very useful. I use it for school, for example I have a flashcard app where I write down the word and the definition, and the app puts them on a flashcard. I have a whole file dedicated to education. When I' am doing chores, I listen to music and when I take a break I play a game. I think the Itouch can be useful for almost anyone. I will review the basic apps that come along with the Itouch, and also review other apps that I can. Please feel free to leave any kind of comments or suggestions. The following information might be of use if you do not already know it. You can delete certain apps and move them by holding down on an app. To move it just drag it to where you want to move it and to delete it just hold down any app and when they start to shake, tap the x and it will delete. If you tap the home button twice it will bring up a little box at the bottom of the screen which shows your most recent apps that you have used. For anyone who wants to know, you can also take a picture of the screen by holding the lock button at the top and at the same time holding the home button.

The Basic Spec's

The iPod Touch 4 Generation has a 3.5 inch wide screen display. It is powered by an Apple A4 Processor. You can either buy an 8GB, 32GB, or 64GB iPod Touch. The Itouch comes with wifi so anyone can get on to internet if that person is close to a wifi hotspot and weighs only about 3.5 ounces. Personally, I think the battery power is great, but I am not sure how long it can go on a single charge. It would probably depend who what you are doing. It comes with two cameras, one on the top front and one on the back left. This allows for Facetime which i will elaborate more on in my Facetime review. It also has a 30-pin dock connector. The Apple iPod Touch has four buttons. Two buttons are for controlling the volume, one is for locking/turning on your iPod Touch, and the middle button which is the home button.

Unboxing

I opened my Apple iPod Touch 4th Generation 8GB on Christmas Day, but I still have my box that it came in. First, I opened the box and took out the iPod. Then, I took the home screen sticker off the Itouch. I saw that the box also came with a USB cable, Apple standard earphones, finger tips, Apple stickers, and an Important Product Information Guide. That's basically what comes in the box with the Itouch. When I was using it though I noticed that the back picked up fingerprints like crazy. I would recommend getting a cover or case to protect the iPod and a screen protector.

Facetime

First of all you need to be in a wifi hot spot to use this. Simply what it does is let you talk to someone, but you can see their face. You can also tap a button on the screen that allows you to show whoever you are talking to anything that your back camera is seeing. You see the front camera shows your face and the back camera shows what is in front of you. There are three tabs on the bottom which are Favorites, Recents, and Contacts. In Favorites you can add any of your contacts like your best friend or your family or anyone that has a fourth generation Itouch. The Recent tab shows you your recent "calls" to your contacts. At the top there is an All button which shows you all your "calls" including missed ones. Then there is the Missed button which shows you the "calls" that you may have missed. The All and Missed buttons tell you the date you or your contact tried to reach you or if you tried to reach him. There is also a blue arrow which tells you the info of that specific "call". Finally there is Contacts which holds your contacts. To put in a contact you have to put in their email address. If you want, you can also put a picture of your contact in and the their phone number.

Calendar

The Calendar app is basically a calendar that stores your events. On the main screen there are four tabs on the very bottom. Those tabs are Today, List, Day, and Month. The Today button show what the current day is. The List button show events of the the current day or any day. The Month button shows exactly what is says, the Months. The Month button also shows the days of week. If you want to go back a month, then you just have to hit an arrow that to the left of the current Month. To go forward a Month, you just have to tap an arrow to the right of the current Month. At the top there are to buttons. One button is called Calendars and one is a plus button that looks like this +. The Calendars button allows you to see just the regular calendar and also Birthdays that you may have put on your calendar. If you tap the Plus button(+), then you can add an event. When you add an event you can put in a Title, Location, start time, and the end time. You can also to choose to repeat the event if you want to and put an alert on. If you put an alert on, you can pick 5 minutes, 15 minutes, or even a day before the actual event for you iPod to remind you. Also you can add notes if you wish. The Calendar app is a great app for anyone who has a busy life and is on the go a lot.

Photos

When you tap the Photos app, Albums or Places pops up. By the way, Albums and Places are two buttons at the bottom of this app. The Albums button brings up the Camera Roll, which shows you all your pictures that you have taken. When you tap Camera Roll, it brings up your pictures in rows. Just tap on one to view it. Once you have tapped on one, you can slide you finger across the iPod to bring up the next one in the row. You can slide your finger to the left to go back to a picture or slide your finger to the right to bring up a new picture. Also you can either share, copy, or delete a picture by hitting a button that looks like a square with an arrow going out of the square. Places show you a map of the places you have taken pictures. As long as you had wifi when you took the picture, then Google Maps can show you where you took your picture(s). If you see a red pin on the map and you tap it, the pin brings up the photos that you took in that place. With any picture you pick, you can pinch to zoom.

Cameras

The Photo's app is a very basic app. When you bring it up, all you have to do is hit the middle button to take a picture or to record a video. To change between picture and video all you have to do is slide a button to the left to record a video. If you are already on the video, then slide the button at the bottom right to the left to take a picture. When you are on the picture mode you can bring up your photos by taping your latest picture at the bottom left hand of the screen. At the top right hand of the screen the there is a camera icon, and if you tap it you can switch from the back camera to the front camera. When you are on video mode, you can also switch from the back camera to the front camera by touching the camera icon at the top right hand of screen. When you are done taking the video, you press the button in the lower left hand side of the screen. When you tap this button it brings up your video that you just shot and you pictures. The rear camera has 0.7 megapixels and but can shoot 720 HD video. The front camera is 0.4 megapixels.

YouTube

Just like the FaceTime app, the YouTube app needs wifi to work as well. There are five tabs at the bottom of the YouTube app. Those five tabs are "Featured, Most Viewed, Search, Favorites, and More." Before I explain those five tabs, I will explain some other stuff. First of all to load more videos, you need to scroll down to the bottom of one of those tabs and hit "Load More...". If you hit the blue and white arrow, it brings up information of the specific video that you taped. The videos show: The title, the percentage of how many people like or dislike the video, the number of views, how long it is, and who uploaded the video. Now back to the five tabs at the bottom; The Featured tab shows the featured videos on the YouTube app. There are more videos then what are showed on the Featured tab. The Most Viewed tab shows the most viewed videos of the Day, Week, and of all time. The Search tab let's you search for any video on the YouTube app. You might not find all of the videos that you can on a desktop, but you can find a lot. The Favorites tab basically just shows what your favorite videos are. The More tab has six choices that you can choose from. Those six choices are: Most Recent, Top Rated, Hostory, My Videos, Subscriptions, and Playlist. Most Recent show the most recent videos that are put up on YouTube. Top Rated shows the most videos that are rated on whether the people like it or don't like it. History shows the most recent videos that you have watched. The My Videos, Subscriptions, and Playlists I can not acess because you need an actuall YouTube account. I'm sure however uses this app will have fun exploring it. This YouTube app might not be the same as the one on a desktop but is still pretty cool and useful.

Stocks

The Stocks app is a very a simple app to use. Since I am a young adult, I do not use this app but that doesn't mean someone else wouldn't. When you load up this app it brings up a list of stocks and if they have lost or gained points. At the bottom of the home screen you can see a graph that shows how a specific stock that you picked is doing. You can see how it's been doing for one day, one week, one month, three months, six months, one year, and two years. Also where the graph is you can slide it to the left or to the right and it either brings up news on that stock or specific information about that stock. At the very bottom of the home screen there is a button to the left and a button to the right. The button to the right let's you delete a stock or add a stock. You can add a stock by searching for it by percentage, price, and market cap. You can delete a stock by touching the red minus button and then hiting delete. When you are at the home screen, the bottom to the left brings of Yahoo Finace. This app could be useful for people who want to see how their stocks are doing.

Maps

When you pull up the Maps app there are two tabs at the bottom. One button is Directions and the other button is is Search. The Search button let's you find another location; but also can give you directions to that location. To get the directions to that location you all you have to do is hit the Directions button. When you are on the home screen you can hit he bottom right button that looks like a piece of paper flipping upwards to bring up six buttons. This buttons are Drop Pin, Show Traffic, Map, Satellite, Hybrid, and List. Playing around with these buttons are fun because you can play around with them to see what they do.

Weather

The Weather app shows the current weather with a picture of it. This app shows you a six day forecast with the highs and the lows for the week. At the very bottom of the screen it shows you when the weather was last updated. Also at the very bottom left and right of the screen are two buttons. The bottom left button brings up Yahoo Weather. The bottom right button allows you to add or delete a city. On the same screen you can choose between the temperature being Celsius or Fahrenheir.

Earphone, Cases, and Clear Screen Protector

If you already have an iPod Touch 4th Generation or any other type of iPod Touch let me know and I will look for some other accessories for the first, second, or third Generations. Maybe you are looking for a case or your earphones broke, just let me know what you are looking for and I will look it up on Amazon for you. There are different types of earphones, so let me know if there are others that you are looking for. As for cases, there are plenty of different cases and like the earphones, please let me know if there is a specific brand or type that you need or are looking for. I wish I had put on a clear screen protector on my iPod Touch because they would do a good job of keeping fingerprints off of the screen. Since I do not have one, I keep a cloth behind mine to clean once in a while. I hope you find what you are looking for and if there is anything in specific that you are looking for let me know and I will be pleased to look for it on Amazon for you.

Notes

When you open Notes, you see all of the notes that you have typed. The first words that you type on a new note is the what the title is gonna be. On the same line as the title you can also see the date of when you typed it. At the very top there is a search button where you can type the name of the title you might be looking for, or you could just scroll up and down. When you pull up a blank note, all you have to do is is tap the the + button at the top of the home screen of the Notes app. Once you get to that screen you can start typing away. When you are done typing, just hit the done button at the top right hand corner of the screen. At the bottom there are several options: you can go back or toward to another note, delete the note or send it as an email as long as you have wifi. To get back to the notes home screen just tap the notes button at the top left corner of the note that you just typed. I use this and another app called DraftPad to write stuff for school. Just a few months ago I typed a health article on DraftPad for school and sent it to my email. When I got it at school, I copied and pasted it from my email and into Microsoft Word and made a few changes.

Utilities

Utilities has three apps that come with it. You can add more apps to it but the original three are Clock, Calculator, and Voice Memos. The clock app has four tabs at the bottom. Those four apps are World Clock, Alarm, Stopwatch, and Timer. The World Clock shows you time from all over the world. The Alarm lets you set up an alarm in which you can pick to repeat, choose the sound, turn snooze off or on, and label the alarm. The stop watch let you time yourself and even has a lap button. The timer lets you time anywhere from 0 hours and 00 minutes to 23 hours and 59 minutes. I have used the Calculator app in school but I do not recommend using it for your main calculator. What I find interesting is that when you hold the iTouch vertically it has the basic functions of a calculator. When you hold it sideways, there are a lot more functions. Also you can type in up to 16 numbers when it is held horizontal. Voice Memos lets you record your voice then lets you hear it. Personally the only app I use the most out of all those is the Calculator app. However, like I said before you probably do not want to use it as your main calculator.

iTunes

iTunes for the iPod Touch is sort of like the one on a regular computer. At the bottom of the screen you have five tabs. Those five tabs are Music, Videos, Search, Purchased, and More. The Videos tab has three tabs at the top of its screen. Those three tabs are Movies, TV shows, and Music Videos. The Movies tab show you all the "new and noteworthy" movies. At the bottom of the Movies tab you can pick either Top Tens and Genres. TV Shows lets you see the newest TV shows and at the bottom is Top Tens and Genres. If anyone would like me to go into more details about anything on the More tab, please leave a comment in the Guestbook.
