Fun Apple Themed Homework

Children love to listen to apple stories, play apple games and snuggle with an apple loving raccoon. You can capture your children's interest in the Apples in the Treetop Unit Study by putting together books, games and fun activities that the children can take home and share their apple experiences with their parents, friends and family.

We put these apple related materials into backpacks for easy transportation and include a raccoon mascot with a journal to record the adventures that the raccoon will have in each child's home. Did you know that raccoons love to eat apples?

With Apples in the Treetop Literacy Bags, homework can be so much fun that children will beg to take their homework home. Homeschoolers will be delighted to take these bags on car trips or when visiting Grandma.

Raccoons love Apples

Raccoons for the Apples in the Treetops Unit study

Raccoons are often depicted washing apples in a stream before eating them. Actually the raccoons don't drink water so they need to get water from their food. Dipping the apple into the stream provides the needed water.

Chester Raccoon is a delightful plush animal to add to your Apples in the Tree Tops Literacy Bag. We happen to have Chester as part of our unit study, The Kissing Hand. You could move Chester from your Kissing Hand Literacy Bag as you begin your Apple Unit Study or you could include any stuffed raccoon.

Apple Games to Add to the Apples in the Tree Tops Literacy Bags

Hi Ho Cherry-O

Though these are cherries, they do resemble apples. I have changed the title on my box to read Apples in the Treetoops. Children practice adding and subtracting apples from the trees which hold exactly 10 apples each. You can vary the game to practice place value, addition and subtraction or just plain counting.

Each of these lenses contains many more games that could be added to the Apples in the Tree Tops Literacy Bag.

A Journal of Apple Activities

Raccoon comes home with your child to visit and play lots of apple related games. Use this journal to record his adventures and then share them with the class when you return to school.

Each time the raccoon visits a new place, plays a game, or helps make an apple recipe, he tells of his adventures in his journal. This journal or diary can be written by the child or can be dictated to an adult or older child. Sharing the adventures with the rest of the children involved in the Apples in the Treetops Unit Study encourages them to write more and often. It also can spark ideas for further adventures and investigations.

Before sending this Apple Face Literacy Bag home, read the book about Feelings to the children and then show them how to make various faces to show feelings. Have them look in a mirror to see their own faces as they demonstrate how they show their feelings. Finally show them how to use the dry erase marker as well as how to wipe off the faces.

1. Write words for feelings on apple shaped papers. (sad, happy, angry, surprised, confused, scared etc.)
2. Laminate these cards.
3. Children use the Dry Erase Marker to draw a face that matches the feeling word.
Note: Be sure to wipe off the faces before sending this Literacy Bag out again.

Apple Homework

Homework Options for the Apples in the Tree Tops Unit Study

Time spent with your child can be limited if they attend school and it seems that most of that time is filled with completing homework assignments. Literacy bags can make that time enjoyable for both parents and children. Because the stories are ones loved by the children and the activities are optional, homework doesn't take away from the pleasurable time spent with your child.
