iPod Touch
The Touch (as it will now be referred to) was release shortly after the iPhone so that people could have the touch screen without the costly phone service.
The Touch comes in 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB models. Respectively the prices are $300, $400, and $500.
The Touch uses "multi-touch" technology so that it must be touched; styluses and fingernails won't work. The Touch also comes equipped with a light sensor that adjusts the brightness of the screen automatically (if you let it). Most people probally wonder why the iPhone has less memory that the iPod Touch; well the answer is that the touch has room for two flash pieces where as the iPhone only has room for one.
The only button on the Touch (front) is the home button which, obviously, brings you to the home button or if you have the update you can hold it to take a screen shot. The button on the top is the lock button and shuts the sreen off and puts the iPod in lock mode. The Touch can play: games, videos, music, and podcasts.
It has the iTunes store built in along with Safari (can only be used when connected to wifi). Parental control can be set and the new Touches come along with (the troublesome) Mobile Me which pushes contacts, appointments, notes, and music onto your computer and/or iPhone through a wireless network (both have to be conected) or through a cable (cpu to iPod Touch). The various apps that can be downloaded are simply incredible. From AIM to being able to drink beer to Sega's Monkey Ball. Most of the game apps use the Touch/iPhone's accelerometer to steer a car or drink beer ;).
The iPod Touch is a very nice consumer product but I'd wait until August/September (2008) because rumor is that Apple is slashing the price to compete with the iPhone.
- BEWARE: Before buying an app see if you can try it on some one else's Touch/iPhone to make sure you like it. My brother downloaded all of the apps mentioned and a few more and Monkey Ball's steering is incredibly hard for those of us used to joysticks. You try and steer, lose focus of what you're seeing and "fall out." But other than that it is a good game.
