Apples

I'm from the Apple Isle, also known as Tasmania, a beautiful island off the south east coast of Australia. The contrast between it and another apple location, the Big Apple (New York) is enormous.

Photo called 'La Nuova Mela' is by Kazze.

Apples are in our blood - not that we grew apples - we ate, and we eat, them. Fresh, dried, stewed, in crumbles, in pies, or covered in toffee. See these popular apple recipes. We even drink apples - fresh apple juice or apple cider.

I can't think of a more versatile fruit. We eat it, cook it, drink it, wear it (on T-shirts), visit it (big apples, apple isles), we have stories about it (Snow White), sayings about it ('an apple a day'), we paint it (think still lifes of fruit).

This lens pulls together this information - recipes, apple art, books, apple crate labels, apple cocktails, wearable apples, great photos - 'mmm that's apples mate!' And travel information on the apple isle (Tasmania) - you can even book a holiday to go there or go to the Big Apple.

Apple folklore

Apples feature in popular sayings or expressions often due to myths. They also feature in stories and experiments. Think Adam and Eve, William Tell and Newton.

In Greek myths we hear of Hera, the queen of gods and her apple trees given as a wedding gift from Gaia, the earth mother. The apples were said to have magical powers, golden and tasted like honey.

According to Christopher Faraone in his book Ancient Greek Love Magic, apples are associated with wedding rituals. Apples are used in eros magic to make a woman fall for the man who throws them at her. Throwing an apple is to elicit desire and so it was customary to eat apples on your wedding night.

In norse mythology apples are the symbol of eternal youth. In China they represent peace, and the apple blossom is a symbol of women's beauty.

Oh, give me my apples!

In the book of Genesis, is the story about Eve eating the apple (or was it? some think it quince, pomegranate, or tomato!). Why apple? Apparently the apple had various meanings including being a tempting love fruit with possible sexual overtones.

So what about apple isle and big apple. I just can't help making apple connections.

The "big apple" name originated during the 30's and 40's when jazz was popular in clubs in New York. There was a popular dance called the 'big apple'. And Manhattan became known for having 'lots of apples on the tree' - lots of places to play jazz.

The term "apple isle" for Tasmania arose because at one stage Tasmania was one of the world's major apple producers. The term also stuck because the shape of the island is a little like an apple.

Great Apple Disasters

(1) Selling apples in supermarkets after keeping them in cold storage for who-knows-how-long.

(2) Plying apples with chemicals that harm us and the environment

(3) Sinking your teeth into an apple and finding half a worm

(4) Sinking your teech into an apple and finding nothing resembling an apple

(5) Preparing an apple dessert and finding brown stuff around the core

Can you call an animated drawing a still life?
René Magritte - The Son of Man
This painting of a man standing in a suit and bowler hat with a green apple covering his face has influenced many creative endeavours.

Travel to the Apple Isle

Hop on a plane, or boat to Hobart

Check out the Apple Isle by landing in Hobart. Hire a car and drive south to see the apple orchards, east to the beaches, west to the wild, windy coast, north to the wineries. Of course, I've simplified it as there's so much more to see.
