HERE'S WHAT I THINK -- APPLES VS ORANGES -- THE BIG DEBATE!

Apples vs Oranges !!!
It is the time-honored idiom that pits these two fruit staples against each other -- apples vs oranges -- comparing apples and oranges. On one side we have the apple dating back to Eve tempting Adam in the Garden of Eden! The apple has a illustrious history. On the other side of this hey monkeybrain debate we have the orange. We didn't talk about it in the Garden of Eve, but this citrus fruit surely has a long history as well. Which side are you on? Apples vs Oranges!

Comparing Apples and Oranges -- According to Wikipedia

The facts about the old idiom -- apples vs oranges

"Apples and oranges" refers to the idiom "comparing apples and oranges", which indicates that two items or groups of items cannot be validly compared. The idiom evokes the apparent differences between items which are popularly thought to be incomparable or incommensurable, such as apples and oranges. The idiom may also be used to indicate that a false analogy has been made between two items, such as where an "apple" is faulted for not being a good "orange". Conversely, where the comparison or analogy is valid, the idiom will usually take the form "comparing apples with apples".

Apples vs Oranges -- Some Research FAQs

Yes people are talking about apples vs oranges!

Carbs in Fruit: Apples vs. Oranges: "Apples gain a slight edge because a large one contains just about the number of carbs you want before a workout (30-40 grams). Oranges level the playing field with their high vitamin-C and beta-carotene content."

Apples vs. Oranges by Paul Hein: OK, maybe Paul Hein isn't really talking about apples vs oranges here, but this reference demonstrates the perhaps absurdity of this idiom, no? He says, "Similarly, the food tasters ought to taste the food blindfolded, and not know who prepared it: the likeable talkative chef, or the sullen, taciturn one." Now that is definitely food for thought!

Apples -- The FAQs

According to Wikipedia

The apple is the pomaceous fruit of the apple tree, species Malus domestica in the rose family Rosaceae. It is one of the most widely cultivated tree fruits. The tree is small and deciduous, reaching tall, with a broad, often densely twiggy crown.

The leaves are alternately arranged simple ovals 5 to 12 cm long and broad on a petiole

with an acute tip, serrated margin and a slightly downy underside. Blossoms are produced in spring simultaneously with the budding of the leaves. The flowers are white with a pink tinge that gradually fades, five petaled, and in diameter. The fruit matures in autumn, and is typically diameter. The center of the fruit contains five carpels arranged in a five-point star, each carpel containing one to three seeds.

The tree originated from Central Asia, where its wild ancestor is still found today. There are more than 7,500 known cultivars of apples resulting in a range of desired characteristics. Cultivars vary in their yield and the ultimate size of the tree, even when grown on the same rootstock.

At least 55 million tons of apples were grown worldwide in 2005, with a value of about $10 billion. China produced about 35% of this total. The United States is the second leading producer, with more than 7.5% of the world production. Turkey, France, Italy, and Iran are also among the leading apple exporters.

Oranges -- The FAQs

According to Wikipedia

An orange?specifically, the sweet orange?is the citrus Citrus ×sinensis (syn. Citrus aurantium L. var. dulcis L., or Citrus aurantium Risso) and its fruit. The orange is a hybrid of ancient cultivated origin, possibly between pomelo (Citrus maxima) and tangerine (Citrus reticulata). It is a small flowering tree growing to about 10 m tall with evergreen leaves, which are arranged alternately, of ovate shape with crenulate margins and 4?10 cm long. The orange fruit is a hesperidium, a type of berry.

Oranges originated in Southeast Asia. The fruit of Citrus sinensis is called sweet orange to distinguish it from Citrus aurantium, the bitter orange. The name is thought to ultimately derive from the Sanskrithttp://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=orange wordhttp://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/orange#English for the orange tree, with its final form developing after passing through numerous intermediate languages.

In a number of languages, it is known as a "Chinese apple" (e.g. Dutch Sinaasappel, "China's apple").

Yes, it has to be apples!

kiwisoutback says:

Apples, but in pies. Does that count?

bdkz says:

Apples!

CherylK says:

I love them both. But if I HAVE to choose, I'd choose apples because we do grow them here in Minnesota.

hlkljgk says:

i loooove apples, especially right off the tree. that reminds me: it's apple picking season!

mulberry says:

There are soooo many things to do with apples, so many recipes...they're tops in my book.

spirituality says:

It depends on my mood, but generally I agree with you. The only way I end up actually eating fruit I take home from the grocery store, is when it isn't too much work to prepare it. In other words: apples (or oranges that you can peal with your hands - we call the mandarines).

No way, it is oranges for me!!

KimGiancaterino says:

Our newly planted orange tree should be producing fruit by 2012.

Spook says:

Choices, choices. Playing sport in a hot climate and they bring on the oranges at half time when you are thirsty. No greater joy in life. Then again outside of this, a big fat, juicy Granny Smith, the same thing applies.

KathyMcGraw says:

Oranges.....more likely to actually eat it :)

Jack2205 says:

I like oranges better than apples.

Oosquid says:

I'll go for oranges because . . . well everybody knows when your peeling an orange.

And they are a nice shade of orange. If they were blue, would they be called blues?

Which fruit is your poison?

Have you found this a curious idiom over the years? Yes, no or maybe? What would you have preferred in the idiom? Pineapples and coconuts maybe?

This debate is ridiculous, it's like comparing apples and oranges! Oh, that's the point.. now I get it. I like 'em both, but apples wins because I've never met an apple pie I didn't like.

Here in Mass, we have NO Florida oranges. Haven't for years. We have Florida OJ, but all of our oranges are from South Africa or California. I miss the Florida ones, they were way better. Nice work, Squid Angel blessed!

Very nice topic. Reminds me of the cover of "Freakanomics." I like both apples and oranges, and am partial to citrus trees only because we've got several in the garden. Blessings to you!
