Step By Step Instructions and Tips on Applying Make-up
Everything you need to know about applying make-up is below. Be sure to start with a fresh, clean face. Optimal results would start with a coarse scrub to exfoliate. Either before or after exfoliating, it is important to wash your skin with an anti-bacterial soap or a mild face wash depending on your skin tone. If you are unsure, then your best bet is to go with Cetaphil, a dermatologist recommended facial cleanser that is mild but still gets the job done. Cetaphil can either be found online or in your local pharmacy/ beauty and health supply retailer. Just remember, always start with a clean face. At the same time as wanting to minimize oils that will cause your make-up to slide right off and clog your pores you still want your skin to be moisturized. So be sure to do the full routine, starting with a cleanser and ending with an oil free facial moisturizer. Cetaphil also makes a great facial moisturizer that many dermatologists readily recommend.

Step #1:
Primer

Just as if you were painting your wall, you would first apply primer, to allow for a more even coat that lasts. Well Ladies, and Queens, it works the same with foundation. Applying a primer onto clean, moisturized skin prior to foundation-that's one of the best things you can do to ensure a long lasting and smooth finish. The primer is kind of like the base before the base. Test your primer before applying moisturizer that first time. Some primers already contain a moisturizer and too much will make your face greasy.
Step #2
Applying Foundation

Foundation serves many purposes, and many feel naked without it. It masks larger pores and blackheads. It evens out your skin tone and hides red spots. For many, it moisturizes, for others, it fights acne. Foundation come in all shades from ivory to beige to amber to mocha. There are types of foundation made to cater to all skin types and tones. Some foundation is called studio foundation. This make-up is made for people going to perform in a commercial for example and usually tends to be too thick for everyday use. Studio foundation is good for serious blotches and scars though, just be sure to apply the moisturizer first so it doesn't get cakey. Then there is the opposite end of the spectrum, the tinted moisturizer foundation. This is basically a moisturizer with a tint for evening out skin tones and in some cases apply a bronze. The tinted moisturizer will have little to no coverage and shouldn't be expected to work as much more than a moisturizer with a little flair. Then there is matte foundation and foundation with powder 1-in-1's that usually provide more coverage than the norm. If you are looking for a thin but efficient foundation keep this in mind: the dryer the foundation, the more coverage, the oilier the thinner it will be.

Step #3
Applying Concealer

True concealer experts have a set of concealers for different problem areas. A light green concealer might even double up as an acne tool with salicylic acid or another oil fighting agent. Green, being the opposite color of red, makes the perfect color for a concealer when using it to cover up troublesome red or pink tones and zits or red blotches. Be warned, though, never use green concealer for under eyes. It will make you look dead. The yellowish lighter color, that is the one you use for the under eye circles and darker grayish blotches. If you have a set of concealers that comes with a third color closest to a normal skin tone, that color is for blending. Always blend with a clean concealer brush.

Step #4
Applying Powder

Powder is not a tool everyone uses. Some people that really have a problem with their foundation looking cakey won't touch powder with a ten foot pole. Others, however, say there is nothing worse than a shiny nose and carry their compact powder with them wherever they go, with occasional trips to the 'powder room' to reapply. Powder is, however, a make up object that slowly seems to be phasing out over time. It was very popular several decades ago, in fact many woman wouldn't leave home without it. Today, woman even apply shimmer to add shine! But for those still down with the matte look, Lancome powder is the best made.
Step #5
Blush

Many people leave blush out of their make up routine. Why I do not know. Brownish Blush can give you a polished look when a shadowy color is applied at the cheekbone. Pinkish Blush can give you a girlish look as if you had just stepped in out of the cold or are too warm. A light gold or silver tinted blush applied ABOVE the cheekbone can give a healthy, radiant, bright eyed and wide awake look. All three of these colors applied accordingly, together?
Well then you have a blush contoure.

Step #6
Eyeshadow Application

Eyeshadow can make, or break, your entire look...there is no doubt about it. It is hard to pull of eyeshadow that is too colorful but it has been done and it has been done well. A cool trick is to put a shiny white shadow under your brow to give your eyes an open look, enhance them and make them look larger. Many people apply a darker color at the crease of their eyelid to create depth. Eyeshadow comes in many types- from glittery or shiny to matte or shadow. Sometimes it takes a few tries to figure out the right shadow for you. If your eyes have any green in them, such as hazel, try a purple shadow one time. If your eyes are blue go for a dark brown. For dark brown eyes a lighter color can open your eyes up and really make them pop.

Step #7
Eyeliner
Eyeliner comes in all colors, but the most commonly used would be dark brown and black. Darker colors highlight the eyes well, although there are some nifty tricks you can do with a white eyeliner...I'll...never...te-ell.
Step #8
Lipstick

Lipstick is the finishing touch on your face and the first to come off. Make sure you buy a long lasting lipstick, otherwise it becomes pointless to wear. Brown tinted lipstick and lip glosses with earthy tones can make your teeth look yellow, so if you are a smoker, beware. Lipsticks too red look out of place unless you are at a formal event and lipsticks that are too dark look goth. Whitish lipstick can make you look washed out if you don't have a tan and have too much contrast if you do. Sometimes it is easier to play it safe and just pop on some really long wearing lip gloss over your natural lip color. My favorite is Mac's Lip Glass.

- Thanks! I'm a tomboy, and if I ever apply my make-up successfully it's because I have a visual arts background ... but those couple times a year I wear make-up I feel like I have no idea what I'm doing. Next time I have to girl it up I'll definitely come back to this lens.
