We reserved a room for a private Tea Party for my daughter's birthday. Seven of us attended and we all had a really nice time. The typical English Tea menu was beyond delicious and the tea was wonderful...served in a china teapot! The hostess was dressed in period clothing and was very charming and personable. She gave a little talk about the history of the Afternoon Tea and Tea Party Etiquette. We all enjoyed our Tea Party very much! I'd like to share that with you here.

Our Afternoon Tea

The Appomattox Tea Room has two floors of wonderful antiques, doll houses, and collectibles. Upstairs they have a large room called the "Pink Room" where they usually have the children's tea parties. My daughter is no longer a child, but we chose that room because it's private and also there would be two little girls attending and we thought they'd enjoy that room. The upstairs also has several other rooms, including two decorated as Nurseries and one as a Retro Room. Also, there's a nice sitting area in the Pink Room. We could sit around afterwards and visit while the children played nearby.

History of the Afternoon Tea

This is the how it is believed the Tea Party originated:
In the early nineteenth century Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, is said to have complained of "having a sinking feeling" during the late afternoon. She requested that a pot of tea and a light snack be brought to her privately in her boudoir during the afternoon. Sometimes friends were invited to join her, and she enjoyed it so much she continued it. Thus began the "Afternoon Tea" and it wasn't long before all fashionable society joined in.

The Proper Way to Make Tea

Brewing a proper pot of tea takes practice!

1. Fill tea pot with hot tap water to pre-heat it.
2. Fill tea kettle with fresh, cold water.
3. Bring the water in the kettle to a boil
4. When the water is almost ready to boil, pour the hot water out of tea pot.
5. Add tea leaves or tea bags. (One teaspoon tea leaves or one tea bag per cup.)
6. Add the boiling water to the tea pot. (6 ounces per cup.)
7. Let tea steep 3 - 7 minutes depending on desired strength.
8. Lemon, sugar, or cream can be added after tea has been poured in cups, if desired.

It's very important to pre-heat the tea pot and always bring the water to a boil to make the best tea.

Proper Etiquette for an English Tea

Below are a few tips for behaving correctly at a tea party!

After sitting down - put purse on lap or behind you against chair back.

Unfold napkin on your lap, if you must leave the table, place napkin on chair.

Sugar/lemon for tea: Sugar is placed in cup first, then lemon. Milk goes in after tea.

Proper placement of spoon - the spoon always goes behind cup. Never leave the spoon in the cup.

Proper holding of cup - do not put your pinky "up", this is not correct.

The correct order for eating the tea tray: savories first, scones next, and sweets last.

Realized I made a mistake on my email, so want to say again that I really like this blog about tea parties and tea rooms. Also the vintage pictures of those having tea!

Yes, when we were on a tour from a NAME (National Association of Miniature Enthusiasts) Convention in Seattle to Victoria. Many of us went to the Empress Hotel for their High Tea. Enjoyed it very much. Love your website. It is great! I'm hostessing a theme gift exchange table for an online convention (!). We are doing items for a high tea that most of us are going to be putting in a teapot shaped rooombox. Looking forward to getting everything from them soon.
