April Fool's Day Pranks

On April 1 at our house, everything gets covered with vaseline - commode seats, doorknobs, kitchen sink faucet handles, car door handles and of course, the coffee pot handle.

I always grab a towel as soon as I wake up on the morning of April 1. I carefully wipe down the bathroom, (thankful the light bulb has not been removed), wipe down the kitchen faucets, wipe off the coffee pot. Oh, I am doing so good. He won't get me this year.

Then the day begins and I get busy with the usual daily routines -- and of course, must run an errand -- the car door always gets me. It's not that I don't know better -- I know very well -- I just forget. After screaming a little bit, with hubby watching and laughing, I return to the house to grab a towel!

We are not young people! We are grandparents! And hubby is legally blind -- but nothing stops him from his April 1 Vaseline rounds!

This is the story Whitey loves to repeat the most -- I woke up a few years ago on my birthday, carefully wiped down everything as I went along, and dressed for the day's appointments. Most days I work in sweats in front of the computer, but some days I have to really dress like a professional -- and this was one of those days. I was so proud of myself. I had even removed the rubber band from the kitchen sink sprayer. He thought he was going to catch me with that one! But I was very careful.

And then, at the last minute, on the way out the door, I had to turn on water at the kitchen sink. He had replaced the rubber band and I was soaked!! Drenched!! He was hollering and laughing and loving every minute of it.

Do you wonder if we will ever grow up? I hope not! Sure would be boring around here!

PS I re-dressed and did get to my appointment on time!

More often than not, my shoes are stuffed with paper. I usually check, but again, sometimes I forget. I generally run around the house barefoot or in stocking feet. But if I need to go outside, ....

Our grandchildren are 5 and 6 years old, and their Poppy, Whitey, has taught them to "stuff shoes". Oh, how they love it!

Our favorite family joke was pulled on my husband at work years ago. He was expecting a phone call from someone, whose name he didn't know, from a company he did business with. When he received a written phone message to call Mr. Lyon, he assumed that was the man. He dialed the number on the message and asked for Mr. Lyon. Yep, it was the number of the local zoo! Bet that wasn't their only call that day, either. He still tells that story every year.

I loved this idea. Of course, I had to tell hubby about Mr. Lyon. We had such fun yesterday leaving messages from Mr. Lyon! Later in the day, callers were just getting an answering service. I guess the zoo got entirely too many calls yesterday! But the prank is fun!
