In western countries, April 1 is known as April Fools' Day or All Fools' Day.

The Romans celebrated Veneralia, the festival of Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, and it was a day for women to seek divine help in their relations with men.

Also on April 1, an uprising began in Cyprus, and a computer brand was launched.

Greek Cypriot uprising, 1 April 1955

EOKA, a Greek Cypriot nationalist military resistance organisation begin an armed uprising on 1 April 1955. They fought for the end of British rule of the island, for self-determination, and for union with Greece.

Apple Computer formed, 1 April 1976

Apple was founded by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne on April1, 1976. Their first product was the Apple I personal computer kit. The Apple II was launched a year later and featured color graphics, and used cassette tapes for storage. The Apple Macintosh was launched in 1984. In 2001 they moved into consumer electronics with the launch of the iPod, followed in 2007 by the iPhone.
