The World Space Party, April 12
On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin was the first human to be launched into space. He made one orbit of the Earth during his 108 minute adventure. He ejected from the re-entry capsule and landed by parachute, ten minutes after the capsule had hit land in the USSR.
Twenty years later, on April 12, 1981, the first Space Shuttle was launched. It orbited the earth 37 times during it's 54 hour flight before landing landing safely on a runway in California on April 14.
Parties are held around the globe to celebrate these events. Organise your own Space Party.

The Union Jack
Has its origins on 12 April 1606
In 1603, King James VI of Scotland was crowned James I of England and the two countries were united through him, though each kingdom remained independent. On 12 April 1606, by royal decree, a new flag was specified to represent this regal union. It combined the red cross on a white background, St George's Cross, and a white saltire on a blue background, Saint Andrew's Cross.
Originally known as "the flag of Britain", by 1674 it was commonly called the Union Jack. At first it was only used on ships, but after the Acts of Union in 1707, the flag came to represent the Kingdom of Great Britain. In 1800 when the Kingdom of Ireland and the Kingdom of Great Britain merged to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, the red saltire cross of St Patrick was added to create the flag we know today.
Wales has never been represented on the Union Jack because Wales was part of the Kingdom of England since the sixteenth century.
