The War of the Pacific

Chile declares war against Peru and Bolivia, April 5, 1879

This was a war over nitrate deposits. Guano could be used as a fertilizer and saltpeter was a key ingredient in explosives. The outcome of the war was that Chile annexed the southern part of Peru and the coastal region of Bolivia, leaving that country landlocked.

Pocahontas

Pocahontas was an American Indian princess who befriended the early settlers in America. She is said to have saved a colonist John Smith from execution in 1607, earning the respect of both her own peole and the settlers.

In 1613 she was taken captive by the English as ransom for prisoners, tools and weapons taken by the Powhatans. When her father refused to return all the tools and weapons, she told him she would rather live with the English. On April 5, 1614, she married an English tobacco farmer, John Rolfe. In 1616, the Rolfes traveled to England to convince people in Europe that the New World's natives could be colonized, and the settlement made safe.
