Aprons~Just Like Mom Used to Wear

This lens is dedicated to the apron, so familiar years ago. Look around, aprons were EVERYWHERE! Women like Laura Ingalls wore them on the prairie. Little school girls wore them over their dresses. Even Aunt Jemima and Betty Crocker wore them in the kitchen. Dorothy in the "Wizard of Oz" wore an apron. Nurses and waitresses wore them, too. How about the old cobbler, or Santa's elves, or Miss Muffet, or... Let's explore how many more we can find. Maybe you'll want to dig out your old aprons you have or some passed down to you from your relatives and display them. Maybe even start your own collection of vintage aprons found at yard sales, flea markets, antique shops, or online auctions. Check out the books I've found where you can read about the aprons our grandmothers loved to wear.

Remember When...

Do you remember Mom wearing her apron to bake something yummy in the oven? Or perhaps to clean and dust? Maybe she wore a fancy embroidered one to entertain guests. How about Dad at the B B Q with apron and chefs hat! Or maybe he was in his workshop with that thick canvas apron with all the pockets! This lens is dedicated to the apron and will perhaps bring back memories of your childhood years at home with Mom before those apron strings were cut loose.

The Apron

An apron is an outer protective garment that covers primarily the front of the body. It may be worn for hygienic reasons as well as in order to protect clothes from wear and tear. The apron is commonly part of the uniform of several work categories, including waitresses, nurses, and domestic workers. Many homemakers also wear them. It is also worn as a decorative garment by women. Aprons are also worn in many commercial establishments to protect workers clothes from damage, mainly bib aprons, but also others such as farrier aprons.

In addition to cloth, aprons can be made from a variety of materials. Rubber aprons are commonly used by persons working with dangerous chemicals, and lead aprons are commonly worn by persons such as X-ray technicians who work near radiation. Aprons, such as those used by carpenters, may have many pockets to hold tools. Waterproof household aprons, made of oilcloth or PVC are suitable for cooking and washing dishes.

The word apron is from the metanalysis of the term "a napron" as "an apron". The original spelling of napron has been lost.

Apron Chronicles: A Patchwork of American Recollections

Amazon Price: (as of 11/15/2009)Buy Now

Product Description
Apron Chronicles: A Patchwork of American Recollections is the book that accompanies the must see exhibit that is presently traveling the U.S.A. .Prompted by project writer and apron curator EllynAnne Geisel, the contributors to Apron Chronicles recall a woman who'd worn an apron and what she represented to a family; an event when an apron was worn; recipes; values and traditions from gentler, less complicated times; the bond between parent and child; survival; friendship; opportunity; challenge, and modern perspective. The diverse contributors include a 111-year-old mother and her only child, a Holocaust survivor, a biology professor from Mali, Africa, and a preteen and her grandmother. Their stories explore the people behind the aprons and give life to the fabrics and the exhibit. While writer EllynAnne is honored to be the voice behind the exhibit, photographer Kristina Loggia has preserved the storytellers' images in an environmental style that complements the unadorned honesty of their recollections. Like the oral histories, the portraits' strength is their directness and lack of pretension. With APRON CHRONICLES as the vehicle, collaborators Geisel and Loggia are providing prompts that will readers recalling and sharing their own apron recollections, which unless heard soon, are in peril of disappearing forever.

Aprons on a Clothesline (The Lake Emily Series #3)

Amazon Price: $10.39 (as of 11/15/2009)Buy Now

Product Description
Book Three in the Lake Emily series

In Lake Emily, life's greatest battles
are won by the power of friendship

Virginia Morgan is used to helping others-it's who she is. A wife. A mother. A grandmother. A friend. But when Virginia suffers a debilitating stroke, she can no longer wear that apron. It is a change that sends her into the depths of hopelessness. Can she find her way to seeing that life is still well worth living? Or will she give up hope and sink deeper into despair?

Meanwhile, the Morgans and Biddles discover that each season of life has its adjustments-for Trudy Biddle marriage and a meddling mother-in-law, for Mae and Peter Morgan the challenges of keeping the family farm afloat as they welcome a new member into their family, and for young Jessie Wise hopes for a new mother.

Filled with the enchantment that makes Lake Emily everyone's hometown, Aprons on a Clothesline is a lovely reminder that hope can be found even in the tragedies of life and that joy waits in the most unexpected places.

This charming volume of over 300 full color photographs is devoted to beautiful, meticulously handcrafted garments in a myriad of designs: unpretentious, complicated, serious, and whimsical. Lively geometric patterns, stars and flowers, kittens and butterflies, trees and acorns, prayers and blessings are all presented in the cross stitch section alone. Another section is devoted to rickrack decoration, including regular rickrack, miniature and jumbo rickrack, as well as rickrack-cross stitch combinations. Yet another section is filled with techniques that include aprons with pulled thread patterns, smocking, Teneriffe Lace, and stairstep borders. This lavish volume includes engaging, informative captions with values and is a must for all textile designers and collectors of vintage household linens.

Oh yes, I have lots of memories...going back to my Grandma. But, everyone used to wear an apron. I did myself, but don't anymore. I love them though. My friend has a collection of her Grandma's aprons hanging on her kitchen wall. You can see a picture of it in my Vintage Decorating Ideas lens. (I'll lensroll you with that lens) You have so many nice lenses...but got to stop looking and get something done! :-)
