The Aquafuge is ideal for creating a controlled area separate from your main aquarium for nursing injured fish and invertebrates back to health, raising copepods and amphipods to feed your aquarium's inhabitants, housing oxygen-releasing plants and more. Comes with its own powerhead for circulating water throughout the refugium, and at the same time leaving the sandbed undisturbed.

Refugiums are great places to grow nutrient-releasing plants and algae. Plants and algae release oxygen and consume harmful gases and substances, and therefore help create a healthy and thriving reef aquarium. Additionally, a thick sandbed in a refugium makes for a perfect breeding ground for helpful bacteria and creatures.

Reef Refugium Video

Video of a reef aquarium refugium

Plants and algae are actually quite beneficial to reef aquariums, but they are often ugly and detract from the beauty of the reef. Refugiums allow for the raising of such plants and algae behind-the-scenes, so you get the benefits without the uglyness. The refugium in this video demonstrates that.

I own a medium aquafuge which I use on my 92 gallon wavefront aquarium. I use it to grow macro algae to feed my tangs and to export nutrients. I think it's a great product. The only thing that I think could make it better is if the water return worked more like the spillover on a hang on tank filter.
