So who is this aquariann character?

aquariann, a combination of my sun sign and middle name, is the alter ego that's given me the courage to share my art with the world.

I've always been on the shy side and have used my creativeness to quietly express myself. I've wanted to be a writer for as long as I can remember, and art just came along for the ride and kind of borrowed the wheel. In elementary school, my friends and I used to make up hordes of characters to write into a young adult series. However, I spent way more time drawing the characters and their situations than actually writing about them - a realization that occurred to me much later. It wasn't until college that it dawned on me to seriously try drawing - thanks to a new addiction to anime and comic books, the discovery of modern fantasy artists such as Amy Brown and Jessica Galbreth, and many art history classes where I got to drool over the beauty of 10,000 years of work.

about Aware

A breast cancer awareness fairy inspired by my mom, a survivor of 14 years. The lump was discovered in her breast back in 1994, but was misdiagnosed as benign until six months later. I was in 7th grade at the time, and have never been more scared in my life. The most vivid memory I have of that time isn't waiting in the hospital or helping with the drainage tube - it was when she had to cut her hair because of the chemo. Her hair had flowed to her knees the entire 13 years I'd known her and seeing her without it was a big change. I can't even begin to imagine how tough it was for her to recover from cancer. She is an incredibly strong woman.

$5 of every 8x10" print sold in my ArtFire shop will be donated to the Susan G. Komen foundation as a gift in my mother's honor.

galleries and communities

All of my artwork can be found on my website, and most can be bought as prints on bookmarks, magnets, note cards, ornaments, pinback buttons, and more in my ArtFire shop. I also list my most popular items in my etsy shop.

I can also be found on several networking sites, including deviantart (where all my professional prints are made), facebook, livejournal, myspace, ning, StumbleUpon and Twitter,

materials

Most of my work is inked with Pigma Microns by Sakura and colored with Prismacolor pencils on smooth Bristol paper. Background colors are digitally added using Photoshop. Below are links to all the materials I actually use. Well, except for the newest version of Photoshop ... I can't afford to upgrade to that quite yet.

about my bookmarks

All of my bookmarks are digitally printed on the back of scrapbook paper, laminated with my Xyron 900, and adorned with decorative yarn, which may vary from one shown in picture. I round the corners myself, so the edges are imperfect. Each one measures approximately 2.25"x7" and comes in a protective sleeve.

about my pinback buttons

My professional quality buttons are made by another Etsyian, the lovely Kittycrossbones, using bright white paper with a 4-color process laser printer.

about my prints

All of my prints are professionally printed by deviantArt using high quality paper with a Lustre finish, which offers a perfect balance between Glossy and Matte. Colors achieved are nearly as bright and lively as the original. Each print is signed on the back (please request if you'd like me to sign on the front, as well) and comes in a protective sleeve. Watermark does not appear on print.

I've been planning to draw a dragon for each birthstone for awhile now. My Peridot dragon was a big hit, but I'm torn which month to do next. Please help me to decide by voting!

comics that captivate me

this week: Uncanny X-Men

Uncanny X-Men was the first series I started collecting, due to the X-Men tv series I used to watch on Saturday mornings back in the early 90s. I now have a few hundred Uncanny X-Men comics, not to mention a couple hundred more of other X-Men titles. And that's still not enough. I'm always on the lookout for more!

Every time a comment is made, a fairy gets its wings ... okay, that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but the support does encourage me to draw more! Thank you so much to everyone that visits, even those shying back in the shadows.
