The Problem with Drinking Tap Water
Here are some important facts on why water filtration is so crucial
In 2002, the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) conducted a study on the water system of nineteen (19) cities in the United States. The cities were chosen based on quality data, reports made by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and government mandated water supplier's annual study on tap water quality, otherwise known as the right to know reports. Based on the report, which was released in June 2003, although generally, tap water quality in most of the cities are good to mediocre, some excellent, NRDC strongly suggests that people should not take lightly the quality of water they consume each day from tap water. Studies show that the following factors pose imminent threat on the quality of US water system:
1. Old Sewage System - As majority of the water system dates back during the pre-World War I era, substantial repairs and upgrade is already needed. Unless a comprehensive analysis of the system be made to determine what needs to be changed, the threat of water contamination is highly probable. Although water filtration and disinfection has widely improved in the last 15 years, measures to upgrade water system infrastructure is necessary.
2. Polluted Sources - While each city varies in origin as far as drinking water is sourced, lakes and rivers are the most common. However, these sources are slowly experiencing the effects of urbanization. On top of NRDC's list of contaminant of water sources includes, municipal sewage, pesticides and fertilizers from agricultural fields, animal waste, industrial waste, mining waste and polluted water from storms or snow melts. This does not include natural contaminants such as arsenic or radon.
3. Weak Legislative Protection - Based on the report released by NRDC, there were legislative rulings that were made by the Bush Administration regarding water protection, more importantly at source. Issues like weakening of Clean Water Act which includes, slashing water quality protection programs, slashing of quality water funds, strengthening of existing water standards control are just some of the issues that has to be reviewed by the Obama administration.
With the above factors, pretty soon, if not taken seriously, the quality of tap water would deteriorate and worst, cannot be at all consumed by the public. Pending issues on hand, how does one ensure that they continue to consume quality and safe drinking water?

Additionally, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the agency under bottled water jurisdiction, do not require rigorous testing of bottled waters. In fact, these products are exempted from testing if they are sold within the same state where they are being produced. Statistics shows that 60-70% accounts for these types of products. In addition, bottled water do not undergo frequent testing as well.
Bottled water has gained its popularity due to convenience and manufacturer's claim of its source. Although the FDA has altered their ruling of misleading claims, they have not completely eliminated it. NRDC studies show that ΒΌ of bottled water actually came from tap water which manufacturer's claim as coming from "spring water" but in reality, it just came from pumped water.
On the other hand, bottled waters are generally made of plastic, which is in itself is harmful to the environment. It is a source of environmental pollution and greatly affects global warming. Although claims have been made that these plastic bottles are PET recycled bottles, only 13% of the over-all bottle population, so to speak, is being recycled. Majority of these bottles end up clogging landfills and becomes hazardous not only to the environment but to the health of people as well.
Having said that, NRDC recommends several solutions to alleviate the proliferation of unscrupulous bottled water manufacturers:
1. Stringent bottle water testing both the bottle itself and the water inside it.
2. Frequent testing to ensure public's safety.
3. Legislative ruling as regards adherence to stricter standards.
4. Shift of public perception on bottled water.
5. Cooperation of the public as regards use of bottled water thereby giving awareness about the effects on health and the environment.
Although NRDC states that the long-term solution is to elevate the quality of tap water system for the entire United States, a reliable water filter system maybe used to ensure safer water supply. Additionally they suggested that purchase filters that are tested and certified by the NSF International. NSF International is non-profit organization that tests water filter systems on the level of filtration they claim. NSF International advises that water filter should pass the NSF/ANSI standard. NSF/ANSI Standard means that the carbon filter used by the filtration system will filter out most of the pollutants that an ordinary tap water have. A certified NSF International filtration system is the public's best bet for a safer, tasteful and better-smelling drinking water.
