Floating Pond Plants

Floating plants for your pond are as necessary as water. Half of your pond needs to be covered so your water doesn't get too hot and to provide shade for your fish. Your submerged vegetation needs shade or it will burn in the sun. Floating plants give your fish something to hide under when hungry egrets, herons or raccoons drop by. And during the hottest days of summer, your floating plants are in full bloom adding yet another dimension to your pond.
Water clover is producing a small yellow bloom that looks beautiful against your water lilies. Water poppies are putting forth little white blooms that look like someone threw popcorn over the top of the pond.

Sun hitting water produces algae. Keep the algae away by using floating plants.

Floating Pond Plants

While stocking your pond with plants, don't forget the floating plants. Usually a floating plant is not in pot, but even if it is, the plant floats on the surface of the water and only stems come from the pot.

The floating plant is prettier than the submerged grasses and is just as important. Not only does the plant look nice, but it provides shade for the submerged plants. Much of the submerged vegetation like some shade and will grow better and therefore do its job better.

The floaters also provide hiding places for your fish. Predators can come calling when they discover your pond. Here in the Southern United States, we have egrets, cranes, and herons. They all love to cruise around the skies and, spying your pond, swoop down for a fresh, new goldfish. If your fish are resting in the shade, the birds will not spot them and they will be safe.

At night the raccoons come calling. They love the vegetation, but will tear it up looking for a nice fresh fish. With hiding places, your fish will be more protected against nocturnal predators.

Cover at least one half of the surface of your pond with floating plants to avoid algae growth and give your fish some shade in the heat of summer.

Choosing the Right Water Lily?

Choosing a Water Lily

Hardy water lilies can grow most anywhere. I have seen lakes high in the Rocky Mountains covered with water lilies. If you live north of the tropics, put a hardy water lily in your pond. If the pond ices over, you will not lose the lily.
Tropical water lilies need tropical weather. If you live in freezing winters, your water lily will need special care in the winter.

Wow - awesome resources here. My mom had a beautiful water garden in our backyard growing up...she has since moved - I miss the sound of the waterfall and all the little creatures we would find around the pond (frogs, turtles...sometimes deer!). When I start my water garden I'm going to have to come back here :)

Thanks for such an informative lens. I've had formal above ground pond for many years that contains goldfish and water lilies. The pond water remains very healthy but this summer I'd like to add some floating plants. I'm starting a blob about Garden Pond Design to add to my knowledge of ponds, fish and aquatic plants.
