Enhancing Electrical Safety and Program Development

It all begins with job planning even though there are regulations, standards and codes in place, we electrical workers still have a lot of work to do to realize the many dangers that exist in the workplace. Whether we choose to accept the risk involved or notElectrical hazards do exist! Most employers provide us the necessary training, personal protective equipment and electrical safety procedures to follow, but often complacency sets in. I know this, I’ve been in the electrical field for more than 30 years and this is something everyone needs to improve upon and it all begins with job planning.  What is a plan? An effective electrical safety plan is somewhat like a procedure and must be accomplished systematically for a work task to be complete. We must indicate step-by-step instructions within the plan about how to perform the job task safely. Often procedures begin their life as a plan after the review and revision cycle occurs. At...

Purpose of an Electrical Safety Program

12/09/2010 1:57 pm | 0 Comments

The basic purpose of your electrical safety program should be to prevent accidents, injuries and equipment damage. Electrical accidents are caused by a combination of several factors—unsafe equipment and/or installation, workplaces made unsafe by the environment, and unsafe work practices. There are various ways physically protecting people from the hazards caused by electricity. These include: insulation, guarding, grounding, and electrical protective devices. Administrative procedures such as safe work-practices, employee training, routine maintenance, inspections and program audits also provide additional measures for protection. For most companies establishing and implementing an electrical safety program can seem to be a difficult task to achieve in house.

NFPA 70E and Arc Flash Training: OSHA Has A New Sheriff In Town!

12/05/2010 1:59 pm | 0 Comments

The Obama administration’s “new OSHA” has a simple message for U.S. industry.  This message has been delivered loudly and clearly by both Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis and Acting Assistant Secretary for Occupational Safety and Health Jordan Barab.  Their message:  “There is a new Sheriff in town.”  And we all know what sheriffs do.  They aggressively enforce the law.  That is exactly what the new Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) intends to do. This includes strict enforcement of the NFPA 70E and Arc Flash Training requirements for employee safety.

Through its OSHA appointments, the Obama administration has established that it will, in fact, be delivering on its commitments to labor.  One of these commitments is a quick reversal of what the Obama campaign and its union supporters claimed was eight years of the Bush administration OSHA “selling out to big business” to the detriment of worker...
