The welding region is sometimes protected by some type of inert or semi-inert gas, known as a shielding gas, and/or an evaporating filler material. The process of arc welding is widely used because of its low capital and running costs.
Getting the arc started is called striking the arc. An arc may be struck by either lightly tapping the electrode against the metal or scratching the electrode against the metal at high speed.

Hobart 770187 Universal Cart for Portable Wire Feed Welders Review
I bought this welder cart at the same time I ordered the Hobart Handler 210 MIG welder. Although it was not the cheapest, it has fairly heavy duty wheels and the frame is perfectly sized for the Hobart unit and a 90 ft3 tank. The upward angle of the cart bed keeps the welder at a good angle for visibility and control. The power cord sticks out the back and snakes around the tank. Ventilation is not obstructed.
The quality is adequate and all the parts were in the box, Only one assembly hole had to be re-drilled to make it fit.

Hobart 770548 Leather Welding Apron Review
I looked for quite a while for a suitable apron for smithing that would not bleed color, had leather straps and pockets. This one perfectly fills the bill for me. It keeps my clothes clean and gives me somewhere to put small tools.
Update-- After about a month one of the waist straps tore off. The straps are pretty thin. I repaired it with some webbing from the fabric shop. I still like the apron, but the straps need improvement.

- Before you start it's important to consider all the safety aspects of the job. Arc welding involves extreme heat, very bright white light and exposure to UV radiation. It's important to keep all of your skin covered up and pay particular attention to your eyes. Wear a good quality welding helmet with the right grade of visor. You should also have a jacket, thick gloves, an apron and rubber soled boots. All these items can be purchased from most hardware stores.
