The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria triggered World War I
Today we'd call it a "tipping point". Amid an enormous arms build-up across Europe, the June 28, 1914 assassination in Sarajevo of Austrian Archduke Ferdinand and his wife was all it took to prompt nations poised to do so to launch the first world war, which killed nine million people.
One might think this could be considered a learning experience and, in fact, after WWI the people of The United States as a whole were extremely reluctant to ever go to war again and the U.S. foreign policy was isolationist, however the sad fact of life is that those who would advocate non-aggression always eventually find themselves at the mercy of those who are more aggressive and more powerful.
Of course, a child could tell you that if you're really interested in peace, the quickest way to find it is by BEING peaceful, but as long as the world is full of people who advocate violence as a solution to problems, there will be populations who insist on waging wars.

Unfortunately, even those who learn from history are powerless when it comes to preventing its repetition
In the case of WWII this played out with the easily anticipated Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor being allowed to take place, so President Franklin D. Roosevelt could declare war on Japan and enter the war.
Of course, if you've read the protocols of The Project For The New American Century (the great majority of the members of this organization became top officials in the first George W. Bush administration, including Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and Paul Wolfowitz) you are aware that they called for a "Pearl Harbor-like event", in order to justify greater global militarization and subsequent empire building beginning at the turn of this century and, right on schedule, they got what they were asking for on 9/11/01.
Was this a co-incidence? If you think so, read "The Terror Timeline" by Paul Thompson (you can order it below), a book that provides a timeline of what the people in the George W. Bush administration were doing from minute to minute on 9/11. It's perfectly clear that we had a system in place to prevent what happened and it's perfectly clear that the system was prevented from functioning by Americans who had the power to do so.
