From Longbow to Recurve - A Natural Evolution

Bows and arrows have a long and storied career that goes back possibly as far as 750,000 years. During that time, the bow has undergone an evolution, which we will explore in this text.

Despite his mightiest efforts, even the strongest cavemen could only throw a spear as far as his strength would allow. As colonies of people grew, so did the demand for food. Better technologies needed to be developed.

Strings were incorporated to add force to the spear, which later became what we know as an arrow.

This equipment, however, has several limiting factors including;

1. The length of the string determines the strength behind the arrow.

2. The string also determines the length of the bow. This is because the bow needs to be long enough for the string to be properly stretched during the resting position.

This all means that if you wanted to shoot a bow very far, you would need a very, very big bow. It could even be taller than you!

This type of bow, called a longbow, has fundamental restrictions that simply don't allow it to fulfill the needs of many archers today.

Enter, the recurve bow.

Some very clever and inventive archer wanted to get rid of his monstrous longbow, while still being able to shoot long distances with great force.

He figured out that by curving the edges of the bow back, away from the archer, he would have a much better bow. The recurve of the edges allows the use of the longer strings needed for long distance shooting, without the need for a longer bow.

The result is a smaller bow which is easier to carry and manage, yes which also packs the same firing power as it's larger counterparts.

In many archery competitions, the recurve bow is the only type of bow that a participant is allowed to wield. This is even true in the Olympics, where no other bows are allowed.

Archery competitions are great, but the original purpose of the bow and arrow was to kill things. The transition to recurve bows affords hunters many benefits. Not only can you target game which is much farther away, but the extra room you have by using a smaller bow allows you to prepare for the shot much more easily. This will give you more accurate shots and a greater likelihood of hitting the target.

Archery Arrows

Archery arrows are the single most important thing, besides the bow itself. Without a good arrow, your aim will always be off, and you will constantly have to compensate to aim properly. There are several different archery arrows, and all of them have different purposes.

The stiffness of the spine (the stiffness of the shaft of the arrow) will effect how much the arrow wobbles after being shot from the bow.

The weight of the arrow is very important. Lighter arrows will travel much faster than a heavier arrow, but it will also do less damage when it hits its target. If all you are doing is target shooting, than this won't matter to you much. However, if you are hunting a big game animal, it will matter to you a lot.

Manufacturers also use different materials to make the shaft of the arrow. Some of these might include carbon, aluminums and wood. It's important that you pick the type of arrow that will suit your particular need.

The type of arrow head you use is also important. For instance, you don't want to hunt Quail with a broad head, because you won't have much of the bird left after the broad head arrow smashes its way through the little bird.

But you would want to use a broad head if you plan on hunting a bigger animal, such as a deer or a moose.

Then there is the nock to consider. Most of the time, the nock is nothing more than a slotted piece of plastic on the end of the arrow. While the nock doesn't seem important, it is. The nock should never be too tight on the string, or else it will impede its release.

If a nock is bent or not straight, it will play havoc with your shot. Once you find a nock that sits well on your string, then it is a good idea to use the same nock on all of your archery arrows.

Another important aspect of archery arrows is the fletching. Some fletching is made of plastic and some of real feathers. While both work well, and archers often argue over the merits of each, the real feather fletching tends to wear out faster than plastic. One thing holds true though, without a good fletching on your arrow, your shot is bound to be off.

Just remember that when shooting a bow, your archery arrows are an important tool. Without them, archery wouldn't be possible. Like all tools, making sure that you have the highest quality tool at your disposal, is always a good idea.

Archery 3D Targets

Hunting with a bow and arrow is far more challenging than with a firearm. A bow hunter needs greater skill, as they must get much closer to the targets than hunters with guns. For this reason, among many others, archery 3D targets are a great way to get practice for new hunters or those looking to become more skilled. Because archery 3D targets come in a variety of shapes, they can also be used by experienced hunters that are thinking of hunting new animals.

Many archery 3D targets are shaped to resemble animals traditionally hunted using a bow and arrow: deer, moose, bear, wild boar, even mountain lions. These animal shaped targets are especially useful because they train the archer how to hit their target accurately and in the zones most likely to achieve the kill. Because archers must get so close to kill, they often only have one shot at the animal. Becoming proficient in hitting 3D targets in the appropriate spots will increase a hunter's likelihood of successfully killing an animal when hunting.

Most 3D archery targets are made with foam that allows the arrow to penetrate the target. Many more expensive brands will layer the foam, making it harder for the arrow to penetrate the target. This layering effect gives greater accuracy to the archer, because it more realistically simulates the force needed to penetrate fur, skin, and flesh. The layered nature of the foam also reduces the amount of friction created at impact, which causes less damage to the 3D target. However, when the target is used frequently, it will still become damaged. Because of this, many brands offer replaceable core parts. Some archery 3D targets even have a cutaway effect. This reveals the layers underneath the skin, making the archer capable of targeting very specific kill zones on the animal. Perfecting hitting these spots on a target will increase an archer's chances of hitting the most sensitive areas on an animal.

If you have a safe place to practice at, archery 3D targets are available for sell at most outdoor and sporting goods stores. However, if you're not interested in owning your own target, there are archery ranges that allow you to practice on their 3D targets. Many of these ranges have hunting recreations that will simulate actual hunting by placing the 3D targets behind trees, on trails, and in other locations typically inhabited by the animals.

Archery 3D targets are a perfect way for both novice and experienced bow hunters to perfect their sport. By offering a simulated target, they can vastly increase a hunter's chances of success.
