Arcteryx Jackets - The Jackets Actually Crafted to Perform

Out there, in the big bad world of adventure-related marketing, there are many manufacturers and advertisers out to get your money, sometime in return for inferior products. In the name of clearing some of the confusion, I've created this lens to profile what I've seen to be some of the highest performing jackets out there in the market today.

Arc'teryx began in North Vancouver in 1989, and upon the awarding of a license from WL Gore and Associates in 1996, began creating jackets using their trademark quality-before-quantity ethos. In that last decade and a half, a number of different jackets have been released. We'll highlight the most recent ones here today.

This blog page offers a good description of one of the range of arcteryx jackets, the Epsilon SV hoody. The review is based on nine guides' opinions over a total of about 200 days. These guys are the premier UK based mountain-guiding outfit; they've also been good sports in letting me use the photo as a title shot so be supportive and give the above link a visit!

Alpha LT Jacket

Lightweight Storm-Proof Protection

Artcteryx Alpha LTThe Alpha LT (light) is Arc'teryx's lightest three-layer Gore-Tex jacket, which means that it is guaranteed waterproof and breathable.. If that isn't enough, the Alpha is full of features like welded seams and fully waterproof zippers - all this make this jacket impervious to the elements. And it goes down to the size of a subway sandwich.

Helmet-compatible Storm Hood is fully adjustable to eliminate unwanted airflow
Tiny Gore seam tape reduces bunching for natural movement
Watertight zippers with zipper garages keep you dry
Die-cut hook-and-loop cuffs won't delaminate
Removable Hemlock inserts keep jacket from bunching up under climbing harness

Alpha SV Jacket

Severe Weather Performance

Arcteryx Alpha SVThere are a lot of companies out there that make waterproof and breathable Gore-Tex jackets. What sets the Arc'teryx Jackets apart is attention to detail, and the SV demonstrates this well. The SV (severe weather) is loaded with solutions to problems that other companies hadn't even recognized so this ultra-light, super-tough shell is worthy of taking on some of Mother Nature's worst.

Storm Hood is helmet compatible and fully adjustable for customized fit and natural movement
WaterTight external zippers with molded zipper garages are weatherproof and welded instead of stitched for superior strength and reduced weight
Removable HemLock inserts keep the jacket from hiking up under an ice-climbing harness

Beta AR Jacket

Protection and Simplicity

Arcteryx Beta ARArc'teryx created the Beta AR Jacket for mountaineers and skiers who want the performance of Gore-Tex Pro and top-notch durability without an entire list of bell-and-whistle features. The Beta AR Jacket includes reinforcements on high-abrasion areas like the shoulders and elbows to increase its lifespan. Underarm WR zips help you stay cool when the going gets tough, and WaterTight zippers combine with GoreTex materials to provide moisture protection when the weather turns nasty. What this Arc'teryx jacket doesn't have too many pockets, or any other weight-adding bells and whistles you don't want.

Gamma MX Softshell

The Dynamic Softshell

Some companies make jackets solely to look good. Arc'teryx builds jackets to perform as well. Sticking with what it knows Arc'teryx made the Gamma MX Hooded Softshell Jacket to handle the mountain's harshest conditions. The Gamma MX brings together two of the world's leading technical-fabric manufacturers, Polartec and Schoeller, and puts their leading products into this jacket. The Polartec Powerstretch gives it warmth, 4-way stretch and good next to skin comfort all whilst maintaining breathability. Arcteryx has persisted with the manufacturing equivalent of the stubborn classroom genius: Schoeller, because there is no question that it makes the best softshell fabric on the market. Good design, including removing excess material, ensures that this is the softshell for you. In the words of one backcountry.com reviewer, "Putting it on made me seem lighter and faster". You will be impressed. Also available in a hooded version.
