Arctic Voices

Arctic Voices as used here is really a play on words. I'm talking about using my own voice as an indigenous Alaskan Native Yup'ik, and I'm also referring to my first solo CD, appropriately titled Arctic Voices.

I produced this CD because of encouragement from friends and family. And because my friend Joe said "Phillip, you really have to cut a CD. This is too good not to be shared. I have a studio and I'd like to talk to you about that." Turns out he and his friend Bruce Innes of The Original Caste fame own Sun Valley Recording, Big Woody Studios. So, we talked, we signed, I came, I played, they produced - and here you have it: Arctic Voices. To my friend Joe I will always be grateful for his belief and encouragement, and that he gave me the shot.

I began playing the Native flute a few years ago because it offered me the opportunity to further explore my tradition and express myself. I now own over a dozen flutes and perform when and where I can. With the exception of two songs, my music is all written and arranged by me, and it all bears connection to my Alaskan Native culture.

Native American Flute music, for those of you who have not experienced it, is beautiful. It touches the soul, reminds your spirit there is more to life than work and stuff, and fills your heart. It can be reminiscent of love, of a beautiful day in the canyon, or bring flooding back memories of a lost loved one.

My hope is that, no matter what kind of music you like, whether you think you will like it or not, you treat it like the food your mom used to make you try: you taste it just once before you say you don't like it... :-)

Here I will use my own Arctic Voice to, of course, promote my own music, performances, and hand made flutes. In addition, I will promote the music of those who have gone before me and those who come after. If you know of something that deserves space here, please let me know.

Peace,
Phillip

"Aarnaquq 'Arctic Voices' (Sun Valley Recording Co.) features the compositions and work of Phillip John Charette (Yup'ik), better known for his amazing masks. Seven different flutes used on this 11-track CD provide a beautifully and subtly shifting tonal range, as on the traditional Yup'ik healing song 'Tarvarnauramken', performed with a myrtle wood flute" - Native Peoples Magazine, August 2008, pg.15, http://www.nativepeoples.com/

Love the small space

I'd like to get back into playing for people. My favorite venues are small audiences, such as are found at coffee and wine shops. If you have a location where you'd like to have me play, please connect. Depending on the location, prices are negotiable, as my primary focus there enjoyment and the sale of CDs. If you'd like a Native American flute musician for your venue, or for your next event, please contact me.

Native Music

It's not just flutes any more

A lot of people, when they think of Native American Music music, think of flutes, drums, and chanting. I'm here to tell ya, this ain't yo mama's Native music any more.

Yes, flutes are lovely - I have dozens of them. Drums are important. They are the heartbeat of the music. I have two. Chanting is important. It is the voice of our people.

But.... We have some great rock and roll sounds. And some Native American musicians are doing some awesome stuff in the rock, rap and hip hop venues. Our youth are developing some very interesting and quality sounds. Many are integrating traditional and contemporary sounds.

I encourage you to check out some of the Native music available on this world wide web. You won't be sorry. I've got some of them on my MySpace page, so if you're interested but you don't know where to go, check out my links here, and on my MySpace page.

You'll be glad you did.

Performances and lectures

Looking for the special touch?

If you have something special coming up, bring in someone they'll remember, someone who doesn't sound like the other musicians you might be considering, someone whose music is so beautiful it will stay with them long after they are gone. Bring in someone who can make magic on a flute... Someone like me. :-)
I love teaching and performing because both have the capacity to bring so much to the people listening. People who are interested in art and Native culture are fascinated and always enjoy themselves. More importantly for the lecture is that they walk away feeling like they know something they didn't know when they walked into the room. Shouldn't that be the outcome of any lecture?

As for the music, I've found that literally all ages - from the very young (infants) to the very old - and in all walks of life, enjoy my music. A performance should leave an indelible mark on a person that they will always remember. People share with me how listening to my music touched them. An artist can't ask for much more than that...
For more about my Alaskan Native Art, my education and research, and previous lectures, please visit my website at: YupikMask.com

Lectures:
I lecture on any number of topics around Alaskan Native Art and Culture, Art in Ceremony, Tradition as Art, Native American Instrument Making and Playing, and more. I will also customize my lectures for your specific needs.
Flute performance, singing & story telling:
Have a special event coming up? An opening, dedication, memorial, wedding, festival, celebration, concert, etc? I'll work with you to develop a performance that suits your needs and keeps a captive audience who will leave feeling great about having been there.
