Ardbeg Scotch Review

The best Scotch in the world

Yes, sorry to spoil the mystery so early but this particular bottle, my most recent purchase, has become my new favourite scotch whisky. Certainly a drink for a cold night rather than a summer afternoon - if you're of this persuasion, take a look at the Glenmorangie Nectar D'Or

Smokey and Peaty, Ardbeg is a true Islay treat.

If this Scotch were a Pink Floyd Album it would be: The Wall

Ardbeg 10 year old is not to everyones tastes. Not instantly accessible but certainly a Scotch for Scotch lovers. This drop is more Roger Waters than Dave Gilmore. Angst quenching, fiery and best enjoyed on a freezing winter's night. A classic.

REGION: Islay

The Island of Islay (pronounced 'Eye-la') Islay Malts' Characteristics Islay whiskies generally reverse the characteristics of Speysides, tending to be dry and peaty; behind the smoke, however, can be gentle mossy scents, and some spice. The southern Islay distilleries produce powerfully phenolic whiskies, with aromas redolent of tar, smoke, iodine and carbolic.

COLOUR: Very Pale Gold

Here's my haiku

Ardbeg for a dram
On a cold dark winter's night
Rollover even.

THE NOSE:

Is that a hospital on fire, over there, in the distance? Ether and Smoke hit the nose with a clenched fist. Add water and this drop 'Peaters' out. Clean? This one is downright disinfected!

BODY:

For a drop from which you can literally feel chest follicles growing, this one's not all braun. As the peat and smoke dissipate, the malt is revealed and finally a natural sweetness prevails.

THE PALATE:

A note of pepper, though more smoke than fire on the palate.

FINISH:

A minum with a dot. A minum with two dots. Looong finish. Try holding that note on a string instrument with one bow stroke. The Ardbeg would beat Yo Yo Ma.

These are not high end scotches, I would like to think that at least 15 years or more to 50 years of aging would be required to judge the best. See you around the galaxy...
