Who's shield?

If you want to now what an Arduino is, I recommend reading my lens about this topic. As I outlined there, the Arduino is a very expandable micro controller prototyping platform, you can expand it with your own modules or with so called "shields" which are readily available modules and all fulfill different usages like adding additional interfaces for Motors or relays for switching on and off lights for example.

They just plug on top of your Arduino Uno and some are even stackable so you can use multiple shields at the same time. Most of them are also compatible with the other members of the Arduino family.

On shieldlist.org you can find a quite complete list with all shields ever made. Some of them come in Kits, some are assembled and some you have to build from scratch on your own.

I will now talk about the ones I like most and what you can use them for.

LCD Shield

display your stats

The LCD shield is one of those you will use over and over. You can use it to display different values, for example you could display the temperature. Or you could build an RSS ticker which shows you newest RSS directly on the LCD Screen. A friend of mine attached it to his NAS to get some stats out, like load and uptime.

It comes with some push buttons that allow you to navigate through menus or other trigger other functions you assign them to. I think if you are new to Arduino Uno and shields this is definitively one you can use for a lot different projects and will have fun with for a long time.

Relay Shield

control your peripherals

If you want to switch large external currents, for example you want your Arduino Uno to switch on your lights or your coffee machine this is the right shield for you.

It comes with four relays which enables you to address 4 different external devices. This shield also works with other types of the Arduino family.

Relay Shield for Arduino

  • Arduino Relay Shield makes it easy to switch large currents with your Arduino board
  • 4 Relays with photo-coupled circuit, also includes xbee socket for use with wireless xbee modules
  • Compatible with Arduino Uno, Duemilanove, Mega, etc.
  • 3 Amps 24VDC/120VAC for each of the 4 on board relays
  • Comes fully assembled

Motor Shield

run your motors

Micro controller projects often involve operating motors, this is the right shield for you if you need to drive up to two DC motors with your Arduino Uno.

Again, this shield has also been tested with other members of the Arduino family.

Motor Shield for Arduino

  • Can drive 2 DC motors at 4.8v - 35v
  • 2 Amps max current for each motor
  • Supports PWM speed control, forward and reverse
  • Tested compatible with Arduino Mega 1280 & 2560, Diecimila, Duemilanove, and UNO
  • Easy to use with on-line Arduino tutorials and example Arduino software

Ethernet Shield

to the interwebs

If you want to connect your Arduino Uno project to the internet this is the right shield to choose. This most definitively is nothing for complete neewbies.

But if you create a device you want to control remotely from the internet, search no more, this is the one you are looking for.

Proto Shield

own ideas

If you have an own idea this is the right frame to start working with. You can easily wire your components on this "naked" shield to build your very own shield.

But be careful, this may get very addictive and you may end up building new shield after shield.
