Are Machines Taking Over Jobs? Could a Robot take over YOUR Job?

Could Machines be partially responsible for the unemployment rates?

As I go through a normal day I experience machines more and more. And I'm not really sure if I like it. The more machines I see, the less humans I see as well. For example, It used to be when I went to the grocery store on a busy Saturday there would be about 10 cashiers ready to assist the customers. Now You will see maybe 4 or 5 cashiers and 4 or 5 machines that are called self service. Yes it is convenient to ring myself up, but I have to wonder does this mean someone lost their job because they were no longer needed? Perhaps a single Mom or Dad?

Have you noticed all those Red Boxes everywhere? You can get a DVD for 99 cents and never have to deal with a human. Do you think that could be the reason Hollywood Video and Blockbuster are closing some of their stores? How many thousands of people are loosing their jobs because other humans would rather deal with a machine? I really would like to know.

Many companies no longer have operators or secretaries answer their phones. When people call the phone company or a credit card company it is almost impossible to get a human person. Now you get to talk to a machine that can assist you or worse yet, you may get someone who isn't even in your country. You get someone who is reading from a script and is to me even worse than dealing with a machine because they seem robotic. But again more lost jobs for Americans. Jobs lost to outsourcing or Machines.

This didn't happen over night. It started years ago when self service gas stations started to appear and then shortly after that ATM's started to appear.

I'm not knocking technology but I am really a little bit scared that the greed of people and companies could really cause more and more unemployment. I also have no idea if there is a solution. It is all a little scary!

Are you concerned about how machines seem to be taking over?

No Way! You gotta head into the future!

Chadrew says:

I hope machines take over all the boring, uncreative jobs, but people live in prosperity, free to pursue whatever they want since machines are working for them :)

LadyLovelace says:

No. There will always be plenty of jobs that machines can't do, or indeed that it's cheaper and more efficient to have done by a human. Having machines do the little jobs provides humans with the opportunity to do what they truly love, instead of something so straightforward it can be automated.

Yes! I'm very concerned!

qasimalhammad says:

Well with machines development; it's a fact that some people have lost their jobs for machines, automated services have started to spread widely due it it's nature of cutting cost, fast and specific services, leaving some people out of their jobs, however seeing machines taking over all people jobs is not going to happen, at least not any soon. However it's still effecting the way people live, their health and their social activity as it becoming less and less.

BizGuides says:

More and more robots of all shapes and sizes and....more entitlement programs.
Do we something wrong here?

jenms says:

Yes, Definitely. It wouldn't be as much concern if unemployment weren't so high, but between outsourcing more and more jobs overseas and automating everything including the grocery checkouts, there are just fewer jobs here for people and that affects everyone. Working in IT, I've seen too many jobs given to people on visas when there is already an overabundance of skilled people already here who need the work. Likewise, tech jobs are being outsourced by the droves. All of these things not only affect the employment level, but they also affect wages.

WendyKrick says:

Yes! I am. I just found out I will be unemployed as the Blockbuster I work at will be shutting down in 6 weeks. Looks like I just became a statistic.

Are Machines taking over jobs?

The real problem is when you infuse some intelligence into the machines in the form of computers... Because a machine has exponential physical power compared with a human, now, by adding a weak form of intelligence, you are assembling a recipe for a new type of disaster. I think that the United States will destroy itself because we don't understand "gentle".

I wish you had done some research and had figures. I would like to know what percentage of unemployed have been edged out by computers .maybe no one can help unemployment because this is just the begining of the takeover.
