Pit Bulls and Your Family
Would you have a pit bull as a family dog

Yes
Rita says:
yes i would. because with the right care, interaction, socialization and love, they are the best. we have a lil girl ourselves and she is the best dog we've had by far. she loves children, other dogs, and anyone who passes by. she's very socialized with everyone in the neighbor and we consistenly train everyday. she's been such a blessing and i would adopt another pitbull in a heartbeat.
Jenn says:
A dog is a dog. Any breed can be dangerous if the dog unstable or has behavioral issues. Personally every pit-bull I have ever met has been the kindest most loving dog and they have no idea how powerful they are, they don't need to.. These dogs are great with kids, cats and other dogs.
People are ignorant and those who know nothing about dogs, assume pits are aggressive dogs.
jessy j says:
because me and my mate jess have just been discusing about pitbulls.even tho we both got one.we do think its suitable for pitbulls to be in your family...
Jose says:
By the way pit bull is not a breed is a type of dog and there's like 7 dif type of dog that they call pitbull but everybody think is only one type of dog. So when one kill someone they just call it pitbull they do not say the breed of dog. Sometimes when an American bulldog kills someone they say is a pitbull . There's over 30 millions type of pitbull dog in the USA if these dog were killer and love to kill ppl then why do they only kill like 11 ppl a year in avg ? If you do the math that's not even 1% of the whole population of pitbull type of dog and there is more pitbull type dog in the USA than any other breed by the wAy. So pitbull are not aggressive . We would see a lot more ppl dying if they were killers like most ppl think they are. Another thing to those ppl that said I knew a nice pitbull and everything n he was well trained n one day he snapped , u don't know the whole story . Maybe when the owner abuse the dog when the door were close . A dog always shows some type of sighs of being kind of aggressive but most ppl do not notice them even those kind of ppl that we're raise with dogs their whole life. I seen this with my eyes and seen this happen with All type of breed not just pitbull.i go to the dog park e Rey weekend and I see ppl bring dog that are aggressive but they r to blind to see or notice the lil sighs they give you.some of those dog have even attach my pitbull but she notice better than not to attack back and she knows I'll be there to defend her. My dog would just back out and ignore that dog and not get close.
Jose says:
Yes I would. I have on and she gets along with any animal I put in front of her, the only problem I have with her is that she's a lil bit hyper .
Amber says:
Yes, I have a four year old female pit bull and she is literally the best dog I've ever owned. She is great with little kids and other animals. We also have a mini yorkie in the household and my pit is so good with the yorkie, she lets her bite and pull on her ears and just be a pest. At the most Chloe, my pit, will lay on top of the yorkie. I think a weel trained pit bull who is brought up in the right environent can be an amazing family dog.. I rescused Chloe after she had been a fight dog but wouldn't fight. She had bite marks and wounds all over her, from where the owner also beat her she is partially deaf. She came back from being this shy dog who was scared of everything to a great dog. She loves people and just wants to please, she is always happy and hasn't ever given me any problems.
nichole walker says:
i have had a pit for 2 years, i am a young mom with 3 kids, 3 cats and a hamster. he does not even bother with any of the animals. we have had him since he was 10 weeks old. He is now 2 , needless to say he has separation anxiety. so he has eaten a few couches, but i had surgery so . . . anyways he is the best dog we have ever had. very obedient, conscious of people near our house and loves loves loves kids!!! people are nervous when i take him for walks and they are heading toward us. but i make him sit and they sometimes ask me about him. when i reassure them that he will not hurt them i educate them a bit on him. I think they are great dogs. Cody is out Pit he was abandoned on a train track with a cat collar and squeak toy!! we nourished him back to health and did all the necessary training needed they are fast learners and usually pick one person as their master.
csila says:
I work at a pet store and pit bulls are the biggest babies ever! I love seeing them they are WAY better than some of the smaller dogs that come in. It is always the small dogs that snap at you. I have not had any problems like that with the pit bulls. It all depends how well you train them.
jessie miller says:
i have a pit bull and both of mine are nice and caring
ABurky says:
Absolutely! We have a pit mix, and she is the sweetest dog I have ever known. She walks without a leash right along my side, she does mot bark at people when they come in our house. We have a relative on hospice so we have people in our home every day, and she has never been anything but friendly to them all. We have a 6 year old daughter who plays with her, and a 2 year old niece we babysit, who plays with
her also. We fostered a male pit from a rescue, and he was about 80 pounds, and a giant sweetheart. He played great with our dog and the kids. We even got our neighbor's grandkids over their fear of dogs by letting them meet ours and see how gentle and calm dogs can be. They are not "bred for violence" at all. Anybody can take any dog and make it violent with abuse. They are simply stronger than other dogs, so if they are violent., they can do more harm. Do we get rid of people that are bigger and more muscular than others? I sure hope not. So why assume ebery dog this breed is born bad? We are trying for a baby and there is no doubt in my mind that she will be a great companion for a baby. She already does roynds around the house to make sure everybody is ok! I wish people would stop making assumptions about them and leave them alone. If you don't want them then don't get them!
Madison says:
I have been raised with pit bulls all my life, and at 20 years old I just recently bought my own.... Every pit I have had was EXCELLENT with kids, other dogs and strangers. They all loved to give kisses, and be loved and hugged, and LOVED sleeping in my bed, the one I have now even insists on sharing my pillow!! He refuses to sleep on his own pillow, he always sits stands and walks right next to me, and is so loving!!!!! For everyone not sure about a pitbull, please think: "blame the deed not the breed" I have heard of labs and retrievers attacking, one recently killed a 2month old baby, and no one makes a big deal about that, but heaven forbid a pit bull nips anyone it's on the freaking news, and the pit bull would be put down, but no not the labs and retrievers, (I've also owned a retriever before, he was excellent) a lot of pit bull attacks I believe were misunderstood, the pit mistook an arm or fingers for chew toys, I honestly don't believe they purposely set out to harm, they just wanted to play... And it might have been too aggressive... And even the attacks that might have been on "purpose" that doesn't mean that EVERY pit bull is vicious. Those dogs didn't choose to be fighting dogs, PEOPLE set up the fights. They make the dogs fight. They do horrible things to them as puppies to make them mean, including starve them and leave them in unbearable heat for hours!!!! It's not the pit bulls who choose to be vicious and mean. It's the way they are raised. Don't discriminate against me and my pit, or someone else's pit just because of what you hear. Educate yourself from CREDIBLE people, learn the truth for yourself. But don't blame dogs for bad behaviors. Blame the owners for not raising and training them the right way! Not everyone should own a pit bull though, they can be stubborn, require quite a bit of attention, (mine went EVERYWHERE with me!!!) and they take a little extra effort to train, but with proper training they Will and can be AMAZING family dogs! So please before you discriminate Educate yourself! Talk to dog trainers, experts, vets, anyone who you trust/believe. You will be surprised what you find out... And FYI a pit is a mix of bull dog and a terrier. Does that make bull dogs bad? Or terriers bad? No, I didn't think so......stop hating on pit bulls, they need more supporters now than ever!!
crystal says:
For the record, my keyboard on my phone sucks
crystal says:
I have a pit, and he is, hands down, the best I have ever owned. I have 5 kids, all of whom he is gentle with. My toddler thinks my pit is a juggler gym. He is submissive to every dog and person he meets. He couldn't be aggressive if he wanted to. Anything with teeth can bite. Obviously, there can be mentally unsound dogs. A dog killing a cow is natural indict of the hunter in every dog. Training and rearing cannot always quell nature. Additionally, the fact everyone seems to miss, is that although pits were breed for their power and tenacity, they were also bred for their friendly nature towards people. If a fighting dog turned on its owner, the dog was culled on the . There is, in fact, a difference between dog aggression and human aggression. Clearly there are exceptions to every rule..cocker spaniels are supposed to be highly intelligent, but we had one that was dumb as a box of rocks. Labs are supposed to be friendly, but I have weeden aggressive labs.
Overbreeding is one major issue with these dogs as they gain popularity. Backyard breeding, done by ignorant people, can result in an unsound dog in any breed. When well socialized, and well trained, a pit has a reputation of being an amazing family dog. Exposure at a young age is key. Obviously, if you have your mind made up, I, not anyone else can change that fact. I know from experience the potential a pit bull has, when properly breed, trained, socialized and exposed. at the same time, this isn't a breed for everyone, and I would never recommend anyone uninformed to own one.
Pit bulls are stronger and more powerful, as well as highly over bred. Not everyone who has a pit knows how to proand bring poorly bred, perly raise one. Therefore, with so many pits falling into the wrong hands, you will have your bad apples, as with any breed. Not every dog is created equal, and not every breed is right for a person/family. Me personally, would I own a pit? In a heartbeat.

Bottom line

One more thing Pitbulls & genetics, if that even is a predetermining factor in a dog being human aggressive or not is widely debated but they were never bred to be people aggressive they were bred for animal aggression and the two have nothing to do with each other
look at the Vick dogs all except four are living as family pets, therapy dogs and living with other dogs and they were some of the most aggressive dog fighters who were faced with unspeakable abuse. And in case you think they were special cases heres another example from the biggest dog fighting bust in U.S history these dogs are scared missing ears legs one has no lips but notice all of these dogs as abused as they are have no aggression towards total strangers as they walk up to them and pick them up.

If they are so dangerous why are almost all of the Pitbull rescues run by women theres even one run by little people. Stop feeding into the lies and put your energy into trying to help these great dogs.
www.fight4yourights.blogspot.com says:
Wow allot of haters here I even see some i recognize from other forums , you people can believe what you like but these are the facts.
Pitbulls by nature are not people aggressive, its either taught or the result of abuse or poor breeding.
Pitbulls were one of the most popular breeds and very well might be again, if I see ten dogs a day six are Pitbulls.
They are the most abused dogs in our country just with dog fighting alone then you add irresponsible or abusive owners im surprised there arent ten times the amount of attacks.
Pitbulls have scored better than 121 other breeds in temperament tests only out scored by the Golden retriever visit the National Canine Research Council http://nationalcanineresearchcouncil.com/
Less than one tenth of one percent of Pitbulls attack anyone or show human aggression. theres an estimated 3.5 million Pitbulls in the U.S that means theres really five million but even with 3.5 million that means
35000 Pitbulls would have to attack to equal one percent of there population .
The media are blood suckers who feed off tragedy's and will do whatever it takes to boost ratings, lets face it what brings more viewers Collie attacks or Pitbull attacks.
Rampant cross breeding with large people aggressive breeds to achieve a certain look or color. Thats how they went from 25 -60 lbs for over a hundred years to 55-135 lbs over the last 15 or 20 years.
Over breeding they are the most bred dog but the hardest to place in homes thats why our shelters are 40 to 60 percent Pitbulls.
Before you start pointing fingers do some research and get your facts straight.
Tommy Garrett says:
Yes I have two now and have owned four others in a total of 27 years as the years have gone on and I have gained experience with the breed my dogs have become better and better. None have been people aggressive and only two would not tolerate any other dogs .I have two sons and three god daughters who were always with my dogs, most bite cases are in some way because of the owners, the rest most likely poor breeding. I work with two rescues and see the worst cases of neglect and abuse and have never been bit by one and almost everyone is super happy and friendly.
Abby says:
wolfepk1 Sure, just like saying all Germans should be killed because of what Hitler did. Not every single dog is guilty and fact, all dogs attack. Pit Bulls just happen to be center of attention for media idiots because of their history. My bet is you have never met one in your life. I have 3 Pit Bulls, a Cocker Spaniel, and a chihuahua. They aren't vicious. The only "vicious" one is my chihuahua. I also have kids and they are extemely gentle with them. Face it, people don't socialize them. and by socialize, I don't mean an hour of training and meeting starngers. Hands on daily. Exercise daily. You can't leave them home and expect they are gonna be angels. In the 20th century they were voted #1 family dog. Of course, before fox news and reporters started their nonsense. You are just ignorant. Your probably going to reply that my dogs only happen to be good, well. I work at an animal shelter where animals come from all over, different cases. And it so happens, there was a Pit bull named Nico who was fought, and he was scheduled to be euthanized, but I saved him. Currently, he is the sweetest dog in the world. Also, tho Pit Bulls might have been bred for aggression, that doesn't mean they are. Not all people should have Pits. They need extensive exercise and socializing non stop and love. Most fail to do this though.
Abby says:
Kay, for your information, dogs NEVER attack for no reason. It is either the owners, or the "victims" fault. There are certain things you shouldn't do with a dog. Plus, dogs are territorial, seeing an unfamiliar figure or scent in their yard triggers their instinct to defend because for all they know, strangers could be evil. My dog was killed by a Boxer. Not a Pit Bull. Even though there was Pit Bull who always lived next door and NEVER harmed her. You ignorant people are basically saying all of the dogs should be killed for what some did. So maybe I should say all black people should be killed because everyone of them will rob us and kill us. Yes, sounds racist and stereotyped right? Well, that is basically what you are saying with the breed. My bet is NONE of you have met one and are just going off of the Media. Fyi, the media is fake. Sorry to burst your bubble but you need to go get a life instead of hating a whole entire freaking breed.
Abby says:
Oh, and people such as Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, General George Patton, Thomas Edison, Madonna, Brad Pitt, Jamie Foxx, Jessica Alba, Rachel Ray, Helen Keller, and hundreds more have owned Pit Bulls. NOT ONE ATTACKED OR EVEN BIT THEM! Stop listening to the stupid Media and stop being ignorant.
Abby says:
Pit Bulls are terribly stereo typed. They have a duty, to please. This is why they are used for fighting along with their strength and agility. But with the right family, it can be a great dog. Actually, in the 20th century was voted number one family dog. But, that was before the media came, and turned people who DON'T EVEN KNOW THE DOG into haters. Suggestion, stop being ignorant. Your, more likely to be bit by lil lil rat dogs than a pit! They want to love ,please, and play ball. They are quite a water dog aswell

I have owned pit buls for years now! Great with kids great security dogs! Just like with any breed of dog you have to be a firm dog owner from the get go! Socializing any dog from when they are puppies would be the smart thing to do.

Ada says:
I'll admit that genetics obviously play a part - but gosh people isn't that why we as responsible owners must choos a breed we can raise and keep properly? If u have a small yard DON'T get an active working breed and then be surprised when he becomes unruly, frustrated and naughty. It is a fact that pitbulls have historically been bred to fight but surely that shouldn't be the end of the matter. Masttiff were used as war dogs for 2000 years, can be very aggressive and are bigger. Yet no-one runs around advicating hoe evil they are. Yes pitbulls bite people and other animals - but so do hunderds of german shepards, dobermanns, boerboels and staffies. Why only vilify one breed? How many of us own who know toy dogs who are just little devils around strangers or other dogs? But we forgibe them because they are small and cute. How exeptable would their behavious be of they were pitbulls? Which begs the question - why the double standards? I believe that we should all be responsible- 1. choose a quality animal not some cross breed (whatever breed you buy) 2. take a look at the parents and their temprements (whatever breed you buy) 3. train and socielies yur puppy well (whatever breed you buy). Choose a breed that suites your circumstances BUT MORE IMPORTANT choose an INDIVIDUAL dog that suites you! Prejudice is a horrible thing - we don't say ALL people are bad, or ALL americans or ALL women or ALL blondes because we understand that generalisation is the crutch of a lazy inept mind. Why would we generelise a breed? I have met several pitbulls. Some very scary and some adorable. I figure if Caesar Milan could successfuly rehabilitate fiting bulls, to show they are not evil - who am i not to give them a chance?

I have one and he is the most biggest softie ever! My gallah (Australian native parrot) rules him! He relishes socialising with both human and canine alike and I have been told he is extremely gentle with the tiny puppies at doggy daycare. My brother-in-law was petrified of dogs and when he heard we had a pit bull, he cringed .... he is now the biggest lover of them. BUT - and I repeat - BUT, it is the OWNER who needs to STEP UP to the plate and RAISE their dogs properly. Mine started puppy school from an early age, then obedience classes and I am a firm believer in Cesar Millan - his teachings have made me a better dog owner! Blame the owner, not the dog. Remember, NO dog knows what breed it is! He is just what YOU want it to be and you need to get ON TOP of any bad behaviour IMMEDIATELY!

i have grown up around pitbulls they are very lovable. my blue/ red nose pit zues did try to bite my sister when he was younger but we set him straight and has never done it since. she can hang on his neck and he wont do anything to her. lucy our other pitbull loves to give kissses and play. i have never been bite by either of them. in fact the only two dogs that have bite me were my grandmothers cocker spanial and our pug. zues will not bite unles he thinks we are playing too rough and then he nips at us he has never drawn blood. dogs dont cause all the recorded deaths each year people do. its not their fault if you cant train them correctly its your
Ricardo says:
Pros:
-fast learners
-fun dogs
-very clingy (all the border collies I've ever had are no more than a few feet behind you whenever you walk anywhere in your house. Heck, mine are both waiting at the door for me when I come out of the bathroom!) could be good or bad
-there are so many things you can do with them
-always keep you laughing with the funny expressions they make. they have very expressive faces.
Cons:
-need a very solid trainer (you give them an inch, they take a mile and won't give it back)
-very energetic
-if not properly exercised, they will dig up, pee on, chew, and destroy anything and everything they want to and there is not a single amount of training that will solve the issue
-it is almost impossible to actually make them tired, for some. My girl almost keels over after a half hour walk and another 40 minutes of frisbee in the backyard. My boy could do twice that much and still be ready to do it again.
-are very territorial and can get nippy and aggressive towards strangers on or near their property.
Almost sounds like a pit bull.
Ricardo says:
First of all I have to ask, where did your uncle gets the dog. You have to be very careful who you buy or take dogs from. There are a lot of backyard breeders and a lot of inbreeding going on. You said that she tried to bite strangers when they came into backyard. Wasn't that her job? To protect the backyard from strangers, I do not remember you saying anything about her trying to bite anybody who lives in the house. Don't get me wrong there are dogs that with all the training in the world could still be bad, but you can find that in any breed. I am an animal control officer and I've had to handle just about every breed out there. I had to go to a call where a black lab bit a 17-year-old in the face and she had to have reconstructive surgery. The dog was a lab, the friendliest breed of dog in the world.

I just got puppy red nose pitt hes very playful and I don't mind it hes just a baby and he's teething so he's bits on everything lol I bought him plantly of toys and I'm giveing him love and attention he needs I want him to be a good playful family dog and so far he is doing great I would say its the bad owners who make the dogs aggressive not the dog itself
Ricardo says:
I am so sick of people saying bad things about pit bulls. When are we going to start admitting that pit bulls are not a bad breed. We just have a piece of crap owners that force or trained these dogs to do bad things. I have four lovable beautiful pitbull's. I do not believe that these dogs are born bad, it's the piece of crap owners that inbreed and use these dogs as moneymakers. to everyone who talks bad about pit bulls that have never owned a pit bull, I say keep your unknowing mouths shut. I don't think you can talk about something that you know nothing about. I think that is part of what is wrong with this world today, we don't have a lot of leaders, but we have a lot of sheep that like to to follow what others say. I am an animal control officer and I deal with different kinds of dog every day. To tell you the truth I rather deal with a pit bull over a Chihuahua any day. To you all uninformed people they are twice as many small dog bites as there are big dog bites. The only problem is the bigger dogs do more damage.

Pit bulls are cute and definitely don't deserve to die.
Hills says:
I wish people would stop saying "they are bred for aggression and violence"....they are NOT! Pit Bulls are the pure breed, the Pits 'assumed' dangerous are the cross breeds, i.e. Pit Bull "Types". These are the dogs that were bred for fighting and even then they were not bred for aggression & violence! They were bred for Strength and Stamina, which made them perfect to endure sometimes lengthy dog fights. The aggression in the animals (key word there people....ANIMALS!) was and always has been taught. Just like children, when born, puppies do not know right from wrong, acceptable behaviour to non-acceptable behaviour, heck they don't even know who their 'Master' is yet?! The owner has to raise the pup and teach it these things. Naturally if they pup is starved, beaten, forced to fight other dogs then yes, that dog will become aggressive and unpredictable, but if the pup is shown who's boss from day 1, they will become just as safe as a Border Collie or St. Bernard! It makes me angry that people who listen to the media (obviously only showing the severe cases of dog attacks and very cleverly only ones involving Pit Bulls) say they are dangerous and were bred for aggression! Aggression is not a natural trait of any dog breed, it is a 'learned emotion' taught by the owner. Also, how can people say they should be bred out?! Then the Pit Bull would become exstinct!! Lions and Tigers are 100% more dangerous than Pit Bulls, yet people give money to charities to stop them from becomming exstinct....so how can they say it's okay to eliminate the Pits?! Hypocritical!! If a Pit Bull has been properly trained and socialised it will ONLY attack if it feels threatened or feels it's territory (the home / garden) or family (pack leader / kids) are being threatened. Dogs do not understand Human emotion / body language in the same way as we do, equally, we do not understand the emotions / body language of dogs as they do. You have to remember that dogs are pack animals evolved from Wolves, it is importnat to understand what certain signs / body languages mean coming from a dog. For example; if a dog is sat rigid staring at you, the best thing to do is to turn your back on it and slowly move away as this is a sign that the dog feels you are a threat, hence the fixated stare. Children can often come under attack as they do not understand this and will stare back at the dog, but unbeknown to them (and most adults) staring eye contact to a dog, means 'a challenge' and the dog will think you want to fight, therefore attack you. This is a defense mechanism, just like humans "fight or flight" emotions. If an attack takes place people immediately want to put the dog to sleep, when really the dog was doing it's job and protecting you or your home from what it 'perceived' as a potential threat!! I would have no problem having a Pit Bull, we've just always had Border Collies in my house, when I come to get my own dog I am seriously considering getting a Pit Bull, but, best believe I will educate it from day 1 so it understands that I am the leader and I will also take the time to educate other people on the temperament of Pit Bulls and what to do / not to do around them. I think it's unfair to punish the breed for lessons taught by irresponsible humans and it's high time this false sterotype was changed!
Cryst'l says:
I have raised 3 Pit Bulls in my adult life. All 3 of my dogs were raised right from the very beginning. I became pregnant when my oldest pit was 3 and the other was 2. I felt more secure at home by myself knowing that they were there to protect me. They used to lay for hours with their heads resting on my stomach. After my son was born, I have pictures of my oldest laying in front of his door, almost guarding it, just watching his crib. When Alex would wake my oldest, Tony, would come running into the living room and bark at me. Tony was also very good about reading a person. Usually any person under the sun could approach me and him on walks. Every once in a while there would be a shady character who would ask to pet him and Tony would make it very clear that person wasn't welcome near us. People who have problems with pit bulls have 1.) never been around one 2.) have tried to be around or raise one and are too weak of an individual to be a pack leader or 3.) are ignorant and gullible enough to buy into the negative reputation told about pits. I will never own another breed. They are socialized from the minute I bring them home, not only with the family dogs, but everyone else that I know that has dogs. We create puppy play dates to make sure that they stay socialized and that's a very important factor in raising any dog. My dogs will protect me when I ask for it and they are always accepting of my son. When he was a young toddler the only way he would fall asleep was with Tony laying next to him so Alex could pull on his ears. Tony loved it and would often fall asleep before Alex. They are extremely strong dogs, physically and emotionally, who are loyal and obedient to their pack leader. They require somone as equally strong emotionally to be their pack leader. The number one problem people make is thinking that your dogs inherit human emotion. They don't. They're CANINES! Treating them like they are a part of the family and treating them like they are human are 2 different things. Based off of temperament alone there is no difference between my dogs and the 2 year old chihuahua we have temporarily living with us. Our roommate does not socialize his dog with other dogs or people and therefore has a demon living in our house. This dog has been so sheltered from life that it is now a monster that needs some serious rehabilitation. The news isn't going to cover that story when this moody little rat attacks someone. Because the strength behind that dog pales in comparison to mine. Instead of talking trash and passing the blame onto the dog saying that they are inherently bad dogs by nature, maybe people should take some time to look at themselves and who they are. You can't raise a pit because you're not a stong enough person, who is clearly lacking emotional stability in some aspect of your life. That doens't mean that there aren't people out there who can't do it. These dogs deserve respect and should be treated like canines. That's what they are. In the end, anyone who owns any sort of pet needs to be ready to understand that they are still animals...with animal instincts...that while mostly compatible with humans, are still animals-how can you expect them to not act as such if people aren't willing to take the time to educate themselves about the breed and about the proper way to raise, discipline and generally interact with them?
Nathan says:
We have a pit and just like every dog if trained to bit people it will. Teach it to be a loving family dog they will be forever. I trust our Pit more than i would trust a small toy dog around my kids. Pit get a bad rap because they have stronger bit than pretty much any dog. But they will protect you and your family from any harm if a taught to be family dog. I love our Pit Bull.

i am getting a pit bull in November its going to be a boy i love dogs i hate wen people clip their ears back but i would never do anything to hurt them and i think pits are amazing family dogs

AuburnWarEagle says:
I love mine as if she were more a family member than a pet. I have two boys 5 and 9 and I have no fear of her ever hurting one of them out of aggression. However, any dog no matter the bread is an animal with its own mind. Which means no matter how much control of her I have, she has her own thought process which I will never have full control of.

Pitties are wonderful animals if they are treated properly. I rescued a Pit puppy and my daughter took him in. He is destructive and hard to contain BUT he is a very sweet, loveable dog.
barbara says:
yes.pit bulls are great dogs, great with kids,my 3 year old son and my pitbull fiona are best frinds she is super gentle with him..love love love pit bulls and my mom was not a fan of the breed but my dog has proven her and everybody wrong, now they love her!! so ban ignorance not pit bulls!
Amy says:
Strong and agile as a con? My pit is a great member of the family.....
ashley:D says:
Yes! they are very protective, loving and fun. I have always owned a pitbull and have never had any problems with them. Its all in how the dog is trained. If you train your dog to be mean and aggressive thats what your going to get, a mean and aggressive dog. But if you train them to be family oriented and nice your going to get a friendly dog thats protective of its family.
ashley:D says:
they are great some people think that are only fighters ment for fighting and killing well they are wrong they were raised that way or act that way because they were beat or treated that way so haters please dont get that bad imperssion thanks love ashley form thompson middle school!

Kristinna says:
While I am still on the fence, I did pick out a cute little pit puppy the other day to add to our family. So far he is the sweetest little pup.. He follows us everywhere and has been playing with our two pomeranians, the neighbors dachounds, and our 5 children. I watch Pit Boss all the time so I decided to give the breed a chance. I will be betting him fixed soon as he is old enough..right now he is about 6 weeks old. I will be watching him closely to make sure he doesn't show any signs of aggression to our children, cats, or pomeranians.
jess says:
I say yes. I was attacked by one once, but I believed it was because the dog hadn't been properly socialized. When I was pregnant, my husband and I, went to the local shelter and in the end had adopted a pit bull. She was the only dog that was "baby-proofed" and the only dog that was calm as we walked by. My son crawled all over. Tugged her tail and her ears. She never growled or barked at anyone or anything except a horse once. She was amazing! People who say no obviously don't believe their breed would attack something, but any dog can.
Linda says:
I certainley would!!! I love Pit Bulls. They are so loving and sooooo cute.
Right now I own an English Springer Spainiel but if I could find one I would snatch him/her up.
meg says:
I love pittys as a breed its not the dog its the owner. I have had them since I was a kid and fully trust them around my children. I have watched my 4 year old daughter dress up my 2 pittys without the slightest bit of aggression I actually think they like it. My opinion of pits from the last 30+ years is they are not aggressive
Ashley and kenny malloy says:
i have a pit bull who is my family dog and he does a wonderful job at it he is two and nutered and has been around my little girl from day one. we love you MARLOW.
renee says:
absolutely pitbulls are loyal, loving the best pups out there nothing loves more unconditionally than a pitbull you can do no wrong in there eyes if people were only so good
Amanda says:
100% get the dog! the breed is amazing! I work at a humane society and my favorite 3 dogs in the whole place are all pit bulls, yes pit bulls may sometimes snap but every single breed of dog will do this me and no co-workers at the humane society all agree that they are one of the most genuinely nice and affectionate dogs, please re-consider your thought on this breed
Adam says:
Blame the deed not the breed. I have a 4 year old pit bull and he has never shown any form of aggression to any person or animal. My girlfriend has a cat and they sleep together every night. All pit bulls want is to make their owners happy. He is the happiest when kids play with him. He is a little intimadating(70 lbs) to people that dont know him. All that it takes is for them to be around him for no longer than 5 min for them to see how loving and sweet he is. There is no such thing as bad dogs just bad owners.
Sony says:
My puppy is half a Pitbull, she's nice cute and adorable she's also fun loving. Though she bites me and licks me a lot. She likes it when we hug her. My puppy likes my me, my mom, my sitter and my dad. She's a great family dog, we love her so much ^^
Sam says:
Pitbulls are amazing dogs I have a 9 month old female brindle named willow she is the best dog I have ever had. I have owned labs, goldens, German shepard, a pom, and two chihuahuas. My two chihuahua mixes are the bosses! Talk about being having a complex my pit takes orders from 2 five pound chihuahua mixes. My pit is a horrible watch dog if you break into my house my spitbull will face wash you and then offer to hold the flash light for you as you rob me even put the stuff in your car and all. My chihuahuas are more vicious then my pittie. She is great with my niece and nephew 5 and 3 follows them everywhere they share lunch with willow and drinks snacks desserts everything!!! If one of the kids goes on time out guess who else goes on time out ?!? You got it willow bug will not leave that child crying on time out she lays at there feet or licks there tears off I trust this dog with my life !!! I was bit by a brindle pit when I was 10 and look at me now ! I now own my own brindle and I have raised her to be the best dog ever socialize socialize socialize I take my willow bug everywhere with a big bag of treats to praise her when she makes mama proud pitties are really misunderstood. You want one for a watch dog pick another breed pitties are people friendly they were bred to be. Pits are the nanny dog they are outstanding with children! I just can't say enough about this super dog's excellent qualities! If poodles were the gang bangers choice of dog then poodles would be the ones with the bad reps look at the people who want these dogs to show others there tough! When in reality it's the complete opposite responsible owners fix there dogs love them treat them like family not bully them into being something there not! I have a cat and a bird my pit loves my cat grooms him can't say thaty cat loves my willow but there happy my pit is scared of the bird vicious though right ? Better watch out big bad 50 pound pittie is scared of a little 9 inch bird and I forgot she is scared of bugs to what a wuss. But again she is soooo dangerous my pittie is over weight cause my neighborhood kids and adults like are constantly spoiling her feeding her loads of treats. They are great dogs if you haven't met one I'm telling you to go do so give the pittie a chance you will not regret it! Save the pitties
marco sanchez says:
I will I have 3 pitbulls and they are nice dogs
Courtney says:
I have a pit mix he has never been agressive towards a person and have a 10 year old step daughter and a 5 month old. I got him when he was a puppy and he has been around kids his whole life. my step daught was 20 months when I got him. Her and her cousins would poke pull lay on, normal kid stuff and all my dog would, and still does with my 5 month old is lick them! My pit has never had a problem I fully trust him and the breed. I think people are very uneducated about the breed it's self and just hear the bad and decide nope no way. They are very loving loyal dogs if you give them the chance, sadly people don't.
seosamha says:
I believe in responsible ownership, most of the problems are caused by ignorance and pure badness in people as owners. Personally I would have a pit bull.
manningtwinb says:
I have 5 children from ages 2 months to 10 years old and 2 pitbulls ages 6 and 5. They r part of the family and have never gave us one problem. The owners determine the behavior of there dog, not the bread!!
whitnee says:
My girl is the sweetest. They are amazing friends. My dog won't attack you but i will if you are uneducated about them and tell me pitts are monsters.
Jerrad28 says:
Pit Bulls are great family dogs and don't need special training for it. They are naturally gentle and affectionate companions and are very loyal. They were bred to be loyal, strong, agile, and gentle toward humans, not vicious man-killers or ferocious beasts
sam sartain says:
yes i love pitts its not the dog its the owner i have ben razed by pitt bulls my hole life. screw all you guys
Dancer says:
Of course!!! They are the best dogs you can possibly have. They are very loveable and very good with everybody!!
Jasmine says:
Absolutely. I have one and he's the best dog I gave ever had. He's very gentle with any child that comes up to him and but will protect his family. I LOVE my Pitt!
shoelace says:
yes i would and i do she has never bit anyone and the guy who h=got her from was traing her to fight but we got just as he went to jail
love-life says:
I would mainly because I do not think it is the breed per-say but the owner. If any dog is trained to fight then it will fight. the thing is that pitbulls are to loyal to leave their owners.
mannasugar says:
Bad owners/ Great dogs
When do they announce good dog behavior in the news?
The only time pit bulls are mentioned is when something bad happens...
scotian says:
i wouldnt live without mine!
d21lopes says:
Betty Boo is the greatest thing to happen to me and my family! Pitbull owners are what is bad for a family!! They need love, activity and direction in that order!! I will never own a different breed of dog...
got-h2o says:
The only people that will answer "no way" have never owned or been loved by one. Falsly informed closed minded people actually believe that they instinctively attack humans, which can be no farther from the truth. They are not killing machines, they are very well trained animals that want nothing more than to please their master.
Dkprincess6 says:
I would and do. I have two Pit Bulls. Neither one of them has ever hurt anyone. They're very protective of my son, and the are both well-trained. They are given a bad rap for nothing.
MikLint says:
I sure want to! The American Pitbull Terrier is probably the most misunderstood breed. They are potentially aggressive towards other animals but not to humans. This is a fact that many people are not aware of. It's my favorite breed because of it's looks (they look so sweet to me), it's energetic and humoristic character, it's agility, and desire to please.
humboldt84 says:
Yes, read Cesar's way!
glockr says:
I had a pit bull that was so well behaved I could put him on the front porch, tell him to stay, leave for an hour or so, and he'd still be there when I returned. He also never started a fight with another dog (though he finished a few). If they're brought up right and not abused, pit bulls make excellent family dogs.
No Way
Snow says:
I have a pit bull and he is not harmful at all.
He's very over protective, good gaurd dog, loves to give kisses, lay really close next to you to make sure nothing bad happens. I think Pits act differently when they are raised by an abuser. Pits are great family dogs. If they are brought up the right way, no one will get hurt, unless they are attacked by you or another animal.
kay says:
My uncle owned a pitbull and raised it from a pup, socializing it very well and never chaining her. When she became full grown she tried biting strangers when they came in the yard, she would run and try knocking them down and biting at them, she had to be put down. She was not raised to fight and not raised bad either. Please explain why she was vicious? How do you trust a pitbull if you raise it correctly and it begins to be aggressive? Not all owners are bad! Not all owners raise them to fight or chain them! They are by nature an aggressive dog.
dubv says:
Pit bulls were never the most popular breed of dog. They also do not test better than other breeds. The reason is that the ATTS test breed summaries are not based upon a random, representative sample and suffer from what is called self-selection bias. Therefore, the interbreed comparison cannot be made.
Thanks for the lies though! Really, it isn't your fault. Pit nutters here this propaganda all the time and believe it to be received truth.
Sal says:
My Border Collie mix has lots of energy and needs to be exercised, she also tends to herd other dogs at the dog park sometimes; she does this because so many of her ancestors were bred to have these behaviors, it's genetic. We knew what her tendencies would be when we adopted her and made sure to train her and get her exercise. Pit Bulls have been bred for aggression. I would not take the chance on having one because genetics are genetics. I can make sure my dog gets exercise and tennis ball chasing time, but I can't train her to not want to run and chase. I could not be comfortable owning a dog bred in a way that could lead them to damage or kill someone else's pet or a person. But it has become "rude" to talk about genetics and original breed purpose when it comes to Pit Bulls and people will rage on you in a second over it, but if you google any herding or hunting breed you will get all kinds of information about how breeding influences their behavior. I don't see the differenc e.
Flip o' the dice says:
I don't dispute the fact that not all pitts are dangerous. I've met one that's been tossed in my lap and washed my face and I've met a handful that were raised right, but one day just snapped. I saw the aftermath of a pitt taking out a full grown cow just because it snapped one day. It had ben RAISED around cattle. But it snapped and those jaws are powerful. Another time the sweetest pitt ever was sitting on the deck with his owner and a boy on a bicycle went by. That dog (this sweet, loving and thoroughly trained/lovingly handled dog) leapt up and took that kid down. Luckily the boy survived but his arm will never be the same again. I'm not saying that other breeds aren't as volatile, I'm just saying that I would never take the chance that one day my sweet, loving pooch decided to clamp its jaws on the neighbor's kid, or even their beloved cat. These dogs should only be sold to and handled by people who respect the breed and its capabilities fully. I want a Borzoi (breed of sight hound) but I don't want to see Mr. Whiskers next door become his next meal. I'm going to stick to my St. Bernard, thanks.
Ken says:
No, would not put my family in harms way to find out different.
wolfepk1 says:
Rachel Rays pit has been involved in 5, count them 5 incidents of violence. This is a multi millionaire with trained handlers who still cannot control her Pit Bull. These dogs are inherently dangerous. Not because they all will go off and attack. Rather because when one of them does snap it winds up in a usually serious, life altering injury or death. These animals are not family pets and should be strictly controlled and regulated to prevent the senseless, needless and growing numbers of attacks and deaths they bring about on an unsuspecting public. People who try to spread misinformation and convince the public these animals are safe are just as responsible as the owners or dogs for the attacks and deaths at their hands.
Linda Rogers says:
I wouldn't take the chance that it might hurt someone.
hater says:
no way
the777group says:
They've been bred to kill. "Sorry" isn't going to help if they attack and I feel strongly that if they aren't banned, $250.000+ compensation should be paid if they do. If it bankrupts the owners, who cares?
SofiaMann says:
These dogs scare me. I would not have one. I prefer other races more playful.
bluesocialmedia says:
No way I am sorry but I would never leave anything to chance with my family
bluesocialmedia says:
No way I know people say that it is an ownership problem but I dont want to leave anything to chance.
Pit Bull Myths
Did you know?
Myth #1. Pit bulls have locking jaws, Many people believe that pit bulls jaws lock and cannot be pried apart. This is a myth, their jaws are much like the jaws of other dogs.Myth #2. Pit bulls are naturally aggressive dogs. In testing dogs aggression pit bulls tested much lower than most other breeds of dogs.
Myth #3. Pit bulls brains never stop growing. This is crazy but I have heard people say that pit bulls brains never stop growing this is 100% untrue.
Myth #4 Pit bulls are genetically driven to kill people. Pitbulls are no different from any other type of dog when it comes to aggression. If handled and trained properly, they are safe and loving pets.

- I have two terrific pit bulls. They are walked separate. Usually when its dark both morning and night, when small dogs and their owners are inside. The reason - small dogs seem to think they can take on a pit. In my neighborhood, small dog owners think its alright for their little buddies not to be on a leash not to mention not picking up their pooh. There are other dog owners who will stop close to see if they can get that "vicious" reaction from the pits, which it does. My dogs are kept inside because I worry about them being stolen. I've had too many inquires on how much money the pits are worth. I have been looking into have them micro chipped. The pits are good house dogs, but don't come in if you're not invited! The only problem I've had with my pits is them stealing the bed covers at night when they sneak up on the bed!

- I would just like to say that I was once attacked by a pit bull. However, when my husband and I went to the local shelter we fell in love with a pit bull. I was pregnant at the time andshe was only dog that didn't bark when we were there. She was also the only "baby-proofed" dog they had. She was a loving dog and was very gental with me son. He could crawl all over her and she wouldn't even think to bite him. The only animal she ever growled at was a horse and after about 5 minutes she walked away. She was my favorite dog. People that are too afraid to give them a chance are really just ignorant. Golden retrievers have attacked people too, yet they are still considered great family dogs. Just open your mind and think about it!

- It angers me to hear people saying pitbulls are just "naturally visious" obviously these people have never owned a pitbull. im 14 years old and im smart enough to know thats not true. ive grew up my whole life with pitbulls and i can tell you i have never felt threatened by one nor attacked, but i can say i have been chased by other little dogs. I promise you its not the dog, its the owner. All my pitbulls are know by many as the "nanny dogs". You wanna know why? we raise them well....BLAME THE DEED NOT THE BREED!

- My puppy is half a PitBull and half a local/street dog breed (familiar dogs in Indonesia-anjing kampung) she's so cute and adorable, she likes food and she's been trained ever since she was 1 1/2 months old, I give her some treats if she does it right. My family loves though she's kinda naughty. I only hate it when she bites me or licks me, I think it's cuz she's a puppy and doesn't know anything. About aggression and determination, well kinda, but it's aggression and determination reflects the personality of my family. Pitbulls are different, some are calm, some are smart, some are aggressive, some like sleeping, sone like eating, and so on. It depends on the dog, not it's breed. Like for example, not all people from all races have the same personality don't they? Pitbulls are meant to be loved.

- All dogs can cause harm, smart guy, even a chihuahua or toy poodle. I know plenty of cases in which humans have attacked others for no reason. Do you propose we outlaw humans too? I have two pitbulls that wouldn't even harm a fly. My two year old niece that hangs all over them, pulls their ears, tail, legs and even rides around on their back like a horse. My pitts have never shown ANY aggression towards her, or any other animal/human. They are beautiful and tame dogs who'd rather lie down on the couch next to me than bite an unsuspecting neighbor.

- Hello form a Squidoo Greeter! Nice informative lens! my husbands side of the family has pit bulls, some are used for guarding property and some are household pets...I personally am not afraid of them, however my husband is and that is picked up by the dogs and they become insecure and react.
you mentioned:
pits bulls tested as one of the least aggressive dogs - if not trained properly pits bulls can be very vicious...that really is an oxymoron.
I feel most people that own Pit Bulls own them for the wrong reasons, and a dog will only reflect who YOU are...Cesar Millan is a great advocate for Pit Bulls and his common sense on owning a Pit Bull makes sense.
